The ikePhone – 1st edition

I absolutely love my DSLR, but it’s not always convenient for me to carry it around Kangqiao and Shanghai. However, I find there is something worth capturing around every corner, and it’s hard for me to ever let those moments slip past. We recently jumped in to the smartphone world with new iPhones, and I’ve found the image quality of the camera to be quite good. Since I have the phone with me wherever I go, I use it to snap those unexpected moments when the Canon is not in hand. Here are some of the first ikePhone shots during our inaugural 2 months in Shanghai, sans editing or any digital post-production.

This is one of my favorite shots so far from the iPhone. If I had taken it with the 5D I’d likely spend some time with the exposure and color… but there’s something I love about it, as-is. A very calm and quiet nature can be found at these hole-in-the-wall fruit markets, which are scattered throughout the city. While the surrounding area is often very busy, I always find the people running the market to be as chilled and peaceful as you can imagine, and there’s never any pressure to shop or buy. To me, this shot captures that vibe. I especially love the unity in colors throughout the image, which are tied in perfectly with the girl’s shirt as soft pinks and yellows dominate the composition.

Produce vendors present their goods in a variety of ways, and there’s often no rhyme or reason to where they set up shop. The vendors on the left can always be found on the street just outside of our apartment complex without fail, but the vendors on the right will show up at any odd hour of the day on this corner nearby campus with their produce presented using any kind of cart, truck, bag, or bicycle doo-hickey they’ve rigged as a market stall. I’m sure to have plenty more images from these corner vendors in the future, as it’s always an interesting show.
