Shanghai: What we’ve learned as of August 29th

The past few weeks have provided us with a roller coaster of ups and downs.  Here are a few highlights of what we’ve learned…

– It is impossible to get all your groceries from just one shop… or two… or three…  it is possible, however, to purchase any and every part of a chicken from any grocery store

– Tesco is not horribly crowded on Saturday mornings (yay!), but Starbucks doesn’t open until 10am (boo!)

– Chinese Internet is slooooooooooooow

– Haggen Dazs Cappuccino Truffle ice cream is AH-MAZING!

– Saying goodbye to loved ones is really, really hard, no matter how prepared you are (sadly, we are re-learning this fact)

– Being away from our family during a loss is incredibly painful and leaves us feeling helpless… so thankful for Vonage and video chats!

– Good friends sure help make the world seem brighter on dreary days

– Making your house a home is absolutely necessary for a sense of peace and happiness (come payday, we’re shoving the ugly furniture in the 3rd bedroom and going shopping!)

– Caramelized onion, white wine, green olive juice, and artichokes make a killer pasta sauce

– First graders can be trained not to wiggle so much =)

– It is possible to get a good microbrew at the Boxing Cat in Puxi

– There are praying mantises in our neighborhood, and they are super fascinating

How I Met Your Mother, Cheers, and Modern Family are so comforting when you are adjusting to a new place and culture

– Shanghai Chinese food (at least the stuff we’ve tasted) is nowhere near as good as PF Changs

– Fireworks are set off for anything and everything!

– Many truck drivers will blast their freakishly loud horns just to watch you jump (stinkers!)

– Gray lint somehow sneaks into the house constantly… what we haven’t learned yet is it’s source!
