Isla’s 4th Birthday | A Mermaid Celebration!

Dive right in, swim this way, it’s Isla Grace’s 4th Birthday!

It wasn’t long after her 3rd birthday party that Isla began planning her 4th! She told me she wanted a mermaid party and we spent many happy hours snuggled up together, looking through ideas on Pinterest. I was having trouble finding a mermaid design to incorporate into the decor that wasn’t either too childish or too mature. Then, as luck would have it, my mom gave me some new notebooks from Rifle Paper Co and one had these adorable mermaids!

This mermaid design became the foundation for the party decor and I built all the colors, details and food around it. I found the same print on wrapping paper, ordered a few rolls, and we made almost everything from those, including the table runner, signage, the cake topper, cup details- and the mermaids even served as inspiration for the mermaid tails my mom made for the girls.

We added a little additional sparkle to the decor with gold sequins and a collection of shells and driftwood Isla found on the beach. We spray painted a handful of the shells gold and they looked so festive!

This large treasure box was the centerpiece for Isla’s party table. We filled it with all sorts of wonderful bobbles fit for mermaids, like gems, strands of pearls, necklaces, rings, and seashells. At the end of the party the girls each got to take home part of the treasure in their own custom treasure boxes (more on this below).

Isla requested a lemon cake this year and I found a killer recipe that simply doctored up a cake mix. I frosted it with a basic cream cheese icing, and decorated the cake with mussel shells that Isla collected and a mermaid cake topper- again, more of that gorgeous wrapping paper. I just mounted the mermaid to a thin piece of cardboard, spray painted the back gold and attached it to a toothpick.

We kept the party food simple, kid friendly, and ocean-themed. We served shells and cheese, peanut butter and jellyfish (we cut the sandwiches out using a fish cookie cutter and added a candy eye), shark teeth and seaweed dip (pita triangles and spinach dip), seafoam (pirate’s booty), driftwood (pretzel rods) and goldfish.

The place cards were made by painting a simple water color wash that matched the mermaid wrapping paper table runner and Isaac hand-lettered them in gold pen.

Isla’s auntie found these adorable mermaid bubbly waters to serve alongside bottled waters.

My mom made these darling mermaid outfits (gold, to match the mermaids in the decor) for each of the girls using sequined stretchy fabric and tulle. They were a hit!

As soon as all the little mermaids arrived we had them decorate their own treasure chests. They painted the wooden boxes with water colors (less mess and they dried quickly!) and then applied sequins and rhinestones with tacky glue. The boxes dried during the remainder of the party, and before everyone left we handed out all the jewelry and goodies from the big treasure chest we used as the centerpiece.

Let’s be mermaids! Next it was time to change into their mermaid attire before eating, opening presents, and enjoying some cake.

Our sweet 4 year old, making a BIG wish!

4 years ago we welcomed the sweetest, smartest, sparkliest, and strongest little girl into the world! Isla Grace, you amaze us daily with your passion for learning, your inventiveness and creativity, your incredible observations, your quirky humor, your expansive vocabulary and impressive conversation skills, your adaptability and understanding, your adventurous spirit, and your beautiful, tender heart. You give us a run for our money sometimes with your sass, but we remind ourselves it’s a sign of your strength and you’ll continue to find ways to communicate with kindness and channel that energy into good. You have brought more love and happiness into our worlds than we ever knew possible and we give thanks every day for the gift of living life with you!!! Happy birthday, sweet girl! We love you more than applesauce 😉

This mermaid was thrilled to have her little shark brother celebrate with her. We are so excited for years of fun birthday parties with these two!

We are so very grateful to celebrated our Isla with a magical birthday party alongside such dear friends and family! You can rest assured that party plans for her 5th birthday are already well under way ;).

Maui!

Hello Hawaii, can I come over? I’m a haole from the mainland looking for a new amore. Does anyone else remember this song from the Garfield in Paradise movie?

Anyone?

Bueller?

Well, it popped into my head as soon we arrived in Maui this past October and played on repeat for the entire trip!

We came to Maui to photograph our dear friends’ wedding at the gorgeous beachfront Olowalu Plantation House. It was such a fabulous day and we cannot thank Ben and Fiona enough for the experience!

Nana and Papa came with us to watch the kiddos while we were working during the wedding festivities. We then enjoyed a week of relaxation together and had the best time!

We rented a condo at the Aston Maui Hill and absolutely loved it. We had views of the ocean and were just a short walk from the pool. Isla STILL talks about wanting to go back to Maui and stay in the exact same condo on an almost daily basis.

Our little fishy loved swimming under water and spent lots of time practicing her swimming skills with Papa.

Cole enjoyed his first few swims while we were in Maui, and he was so calm the entire time. He is definitely a little water baby!

Isaac took a surfing lesson and loved it! The kids and I sat on the shore and acted as his cheering section. Truth be told, we were really impressed by how often he could stand up on the board.

While Isaac’s #1 vacation priority was to learn to surf, I pretty much made it my goal to consume my weight in fresh ahi. I did a pretty good job too. It is worth noting that the poke at South Maui Fish Co. is incredible!

Ben and Fiona had Ululani’s shave ice at their wedding (amazing, right?!) and we couldn’t wait to take Isla, Nana, and Papa to experience the best shave ice on the island. We made quite a few trips to Ululani’s during our stay. Yum!

Isla turned 4 while we were in Maui, and we truly couldn’t have imagined a more perfect celebration for our little mermaid! We started the day with breakfast on our lanai and a cinnamon roll “cake” tower. After opening presents, and trying on her new Moana outfit, we spent the remainder of the morning at the pool. We rounded out Isla’s birthday celebration with a Luau at the Old Lahaina that evening. We all had an absolute ball!

Isla had found a “lukulele” she loved when we were shopping, and sneaky Nana got it for her as a birthday present. Isla couldn’t wait to try it out!

^ The most “Isla” photo there ever was! Love, love, love our sparkly girl!

Isla found this dress at an ABC store and it was love at first sight! She was so excited to wear it for the luau.

Love these sweet babies!!!

Oh hey, look where we found ourselves again!

One of the shave ice makers gave Isla an ice ball and she wasted no time surprising Papa with it!

On our last day in Maui we visited the Maui Ocean Center.

Who’s the cutest shark here?

Isla’s first taste of Dole Whip. Absolute bliss!

We are so grateful to have had the opportunity to share this time with Nana and Papa in beautiful Maui. We are already looking for opportunities to go back!

Fall Highlights

Because I just can’t bring myself to post current happenings without sharing some of our favorite 2017 moments…

We spent most of September snuggled up together and getting used to life as a family of 4.

Having experienced the addition of a new family member with Isla, and being very eager for snuggles with us, the kitties accepted Cole pretty quickly.

When we first brought Isla home and tried to give her her first bath she cried so hard it made me cry. I was preparing myself for a similar response with Cole, but he was so calm and happy, even when I was rinsing his hair. Looks like we have a little fishy on our hands! Like his big sister, he loved the warmth of the hair dryer after his bath.

Isla started Soccer Shots classes and absolutely LOVED them! She played her little heart out each week! We cannot wait for the spring session to start next month.

That proud little face when she scored. I melt!

One of the best parts of soccer was getting to hang out with our buddy Luke and his family each week!

Cole’s birth announcement photo… that we never ended up making. We never finished Isla’s birth announcement either. Eh, win some, lose some, right?

Mom’s first attempt at some sibling portraits.

Towards the end of September we had a stretch of unusually warm summery days. I had found this shirt months earlier and intended to do a little photo shoot with Isla, but hadn’t been able to make the time. Knowing our sunny days for the year were numbered I did what any good mom would do: let Isla skip her nap, and instead took photos of her eating an ice cream cone. It was a great afternoon for us both!

The moment October arrived you could find us at a pumpkin patch! First stop, The Pumpkin Patch at Sauvie Island.

This was Cole’s first trip to the pumpkin patch. That split second his eyes opened during the above photo was the only time he was awake!

Taking a very important call on her stem phone. This kid and her imagination!

The pumpkin patch is definitely our family’s happy place!

We enjoyed beautiful fall walks and leaf collecting adventures as often as we could…

Isla LOVED her cobweb “witch” skirt and asked to wear it often.

Little pumpkin.

More pumpkin adventures! One weekend we visited 3 different patches. It was a Pumpkin Patch Palooza! On Friday we went to Bauman’s Farm with Nana, Papa, Auntie Leah, Uncle Moises, and Cali. We enjoyed sweet apple slushies and warm apple doughnuts. Isla found this play area with a nut room and that’s literally where we stayed the entire time we were at the patch!

The next morning we went to Lakeview Farms with our friends, Luke and Bellamy. Thankfully, there was no nut room, so we actually made it out to the pumpkins! The kiddos had a ball riding the train and the little boat. Isla was absolutely spoiled for choice in the “little pumpkin” department (her favorites) and we ended up coming home with quite a few!

And later that day, we went back to The Pumpkin Patch at Sauvie Island with Madelyn. The girls had an absolute ball running around the patch, and looked so cute in their matching Halloween shirts (third year in a row for that fun tradition!).

Mid-October we hopped over the Pacific and enjoyed a glorious week in Maui! I’ll make a separate post about this trip. So much shaved ice goodness to share…

Back to Portland and all things pumpkin! Isla designed and helped carve her own darling jack-o-lantern this year. It was so cute!

Our October girl celebrated her 4th birthday with a festive mermaid party! I’ll also share a separate post about this celebration.

Happy Halloween from the sweetest little boos!!!

Cole was pumped for his first Halloween!

Love this little pumpkin with all our hearts!!!

We love having our friends join us for trick-or-treating each year! It has become one of our favorite annual traditions!Isla wanted to be a mermaid this year, and Grauntie once again assisted us in making her a beautiful costume! Cole was Isla’s little shark companion. How amazing is Madelyn’s sharpei costume?! Oh my goodness, watching these two running up to each house, hand in hand, was so sweet!Every year I am more and more amazed at the efforts made by our neighbors to decorate for Halloween. It makes for such a festive Trick-Or-Treat experience!

We spent a fun fall afternoon with our siblings taking family portraits so we could surprise Nana and Papa with new wall art for Christmas!

Such a little turkey!

Cousin Morgan turned 8 and had a super fun horse themed birthday party where Isla got to take her first ride. Once she was up in the saddle she started getting nervous, but was all about petting the horse’s nose afterwards.Right before Thanksgiving we took Cole to the beach cottage for the first time! He was so cozy he slept through his first beach walk.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Cole’s Birth Story

Today our Cole has been earth-side with us for 6 months! Half a year of sweetness, snuggles, smiles, and sleep deprivation. Ha! This milestone seemed like the perfect opportunity to share Cole’s birth story. As many of you know, Cole was experiencing respiratory distress shortly after birth and had to be emergency transported to the NICU at Randall Children’s Hospital. This was absolutely terrifying for us, and was a very rough ending to what was an otherwise wonderful day. Cole’s delivery was the most joyful event, and  our birth experience could not have been better!

I was admitted to the hospital on the evening of September 7th to start my induction. We made a stop at Papa Haydn’s for a decadent dinner on our way, and surprised Isla with a collection of big sister books and a sparkly, “This is what an awesome big sister looks like” shirt to wear the next day. The bittersweet reality of it being our last moments as a family of three really hit when I hugged Isla goodbye before she headed home with her Nana for the night.

After arriving at the hospital, I was placed on monitors and given a cervical softener to start the induction. It turned out I was already having light, but regular contractions. Effacement and dilation were also underway, so that was all positive news. Isaac and I slept as well as you can on hospital furniture for the night, and early the next morning our amazing OB, Dr. Barrett, arrived to check on our progress. She broke my water at 9:00am and started Pitocin to get the contractions moving along. Having all back labor with Isla, I was absolutely shocked at how much more tolerable these contractions were, and it was so fascinating to actually feel them around my belly. How crazy that birth experiences can vary so greatly for the same mother!

Predicting a fairly easy labor, we invited my mom, aunt and Isaac’s parents to join us for the day. Isla insisted on being there when baby Cole “popped out.” Given her fascination with science and overall maturity, we decided to let her come to the delivery, and it was so wonderful having her there! We also asked our lovely and talented friend, Lauren, to document our birth story for us. We will be forever grateful for the tender and magical moments she captured!

So, our birthing suite was filled with people we love, contractions were growing in intensity, and everything was progressing beautifully. I was having some increased pain in my back around my SI joints, so somewhere around 6 cm I decided to get an epidural. For the next few hours I chose to rest, falling peacefully in and out of sleep, preparing for all the action ahead. I could feel the excitement and positive energy around me as we neared the delivery, and it was so comforting to have such great support from everyone throughout the day. Dr. Barrett came to check me again and Cole had turned so that he was face up. I spent an hour or two on my forearms and knees in an attempt to get him to turn again. An hour or so later I was checked again, and it was time to start pushing.

The room was suddenly buzzing with excitement, as the medical staff busily prepared for Cole’s arrival. After a few rounds of pushing Isla began to cheer and count along at each contraction. Hearing the excitement in her sweet little voice was the most uplifting encouragement. A short 25 minutes later, and still face up, Cole LaRocca Marshall entered the world! There was laughter and celebration, and happy tears streamed down everyone’s cheeks. It was one of the most perfect and beautiful moments I’ve ever experienced.

Inspiration struck Isla several minutes after watching her brother be born, and soon she was “birthing” her own kitten baby (and had convinced her Grauntie to assist with the delivery!). This kid’s imagination never ceases to amaze us!Cole LaRocca Marshall

Born at 5:38 PM on Friday, September 8, 2017

8 lbs 5 oz and 22 inches (although that is now up for debate, as his 2 week check up revealed him to be shorter! Ha!) Mostly cheeks. Love this kid.

Sweet big sister was all tuckered out after such a big day!

The following photos are from Cole’s first week of life, during his stay in the NICU at Randall Children’s Hospital. In addition to his lungs being a bit premature, he developed a pneumothorax (a hole in the lung that allows air to escape. The escaped air becomes trapped against the chest wall and begins to collapse the lung). Cole spent several days on a CPAP machine, received a needle aspiration to remove the trapped air, followed by additional breathing support, several days of light therapy for jaundice, and then more time to allow his digestive system to get up and running after he was weaned off his feeding tube and onto breast feeding. Those were his first 8 days, and they felt like months!

Given how quickly Cole’s condition had declined after birth, Isaac never had a chance to hold him until Cole’s CPAP machine was taken off several days later. This moment was magic.

These two shared an instant bond.

Less than a week old and already holding his own pacifier in his mouth!

Cole’s lion, who we named Baxter after his wonderful NICU doctor, took over pacifier-holding duties while Cole slept.

Home!!! Isla held Cole for the first time to celebrate. So unbelievably grateful for these sweet little souls!

Summer Highlights

Because I just can’t bring myself to post current happenings without sharing some of our favorite 2017 moments…

Our annual strawberry picking outing, where the girls walk away with more berries in their bellies than in their buckets!

Several big girl milestones…

1. Isla moved into a big girl bed.

There was no ceremonious bed time that first night night because Isla fell asleep watching a movie, but it was certainly surreal for us to tuck our sweet girl into her new “big girl bed” for the first time. We sat in her dark room and just stared at her, so tiny in that sea of new “big girl bedding.” Each milestone is so exciting, but knowing Isla is growing up so fast also makes me ache for those sweet baby and toddler moments with her. This morning she was all smiles as she excitedly told me she had the most comfortable sleep! Then she burrowed back under the covers and asked to stay in her bed longer.

2. Isla’s last night with her ooh ooh. This is the night Isla made the decision to give up her beloved ooh ooh. For those who know Isla, she LOVES her pacifier. Like, Maggie Simpson-level attachment. Times a million. It has been such a treasured soothing device since the day after she was born, and I could not even begin to imagine our girl without it. For the last half of a year we had been slowly easing Isla into the idea of giving up her pacifier. We told countless stories of the magical Ooh Ooh Fairy who would bring wonderful presents in exchange for the pacifiers. She was slow to warm to the idea, but in a burst of confidence, decided this day was the day. She wrote a letter to the Ooh Ooh Fairy and left it, along with her one remaining ooh ooh, by the front door. She went to bed filled with pride and certainty, only to melt into a puddle of heart-wrenching tears just a few minutes later. I laid with her for the next hour, consoling her, explaining it was okay to feel sad, assuring her each day would get easier, refocusing her to thoughts that made her happy, and finally rubbing her back and arms until she drifted off to dreamland. In those final moments before she fell asleep she turned towards me, drowsily opened one eye and said, “I love you, Mom.” And I just melted. I stayed with her while she slept and watched her angelic little face. I noticed how different she looked as she slept without her ooh ooh. So grown up. I breathed a heavy sigh of relief that she was able to sleep. The love I felt for her was all-consuming and I wanted nothing more than to preserve that moment in my mind forever. Then my heart just ached. It ached to know those baby years were really, truly gone. It ached to know I will never again hear those sweet little sucking sounds as she sleeps. It ached to know my sweet girl know had experienced the pain of loss. It ached knowing that she will continue to hurt as she adjusts to life without her ooh ooh. It seemed like such a little thing, but Isla’s ooh ooh had been a big part of her life. The ooh ooh fairy delivered!!!!!!!! Two crowns and a pair of goggles, and the teeniest, tiniest fairy-sized note responding to all of Isla’s questions. Isla was thrilled and wore the goggles for days! These new goodies definitely eased the pain of giving up her ooh ooh.

We were so grateful to enjoy lots of time at our beach cottage. Our days were filled beautiful weather, quality time together, and many long walks along the shoreline collecting treasures. Isla’s Nana Sandy made her this fabulous collection bag and Isla could not love it more!

We spent Father’s Day at the beach too!

Isla painted this gorgeous card for her Daddo of the two of them playing soccer, one of their favorite pastimes. She made him a heart with her pearler bead set- a true labor of love, let me tell you. I helped her decorate a frame with many of the rocks she had collected on the beach for the “Daddo, you rock” art piece.

A few s’mores were consumed…

World’s best daughter, right here! Isla had seen Isaac massage my swollen feet so often throughout my pregnancy that she started offering to help.

Isla had the honor of being Auntie Lizzie’s flower girl, and it was, without a doubt, one of the greatest days of her life! This kiddo stole the show and loved every single moment in her beautiful flower girl attire. Lizzie and Chaz’s celebration was gorgeous, joy-filled, and could not have been more wonderful! We are just thrilled to have had the opportunity to celebrate with them.

We got to celebrate sweet Cali’s 2nd birthday at the beach with all the cousins. We sure love this spunky girl!

We began collaborating with our local neighborhood magazine and are now shooting their covers for them. We have had such a wonderful time getting to know more of the awesome people in our community through this venture. Our family was even featured in one of the issues!

We were given two absolutely gorgeous baby showers for our sweet Cole. Each and every detail was perfect. My heart still overflows thinking about these celebrations!

We enjoyed our annual girls’ getaway at the beach with our dear friends. It is so exciting to have three generations celebrating together. Our little mermaids had a ball painting, playing in the water, collecting, and snuggling in their mermaid tail blankets for movie time. We mommies and grandmothers maintained our usual girls’ getaway routine: eat, play games, eat, laugh, eat, beach walk, eat… it was perfect!

We also enjoyed our second annual getaway off the grid at our friends’ remote cabin in Southern Oregon. Amazing food, lots of time outdoors, and endless laughter. You can’t ask for more!

We headed back to the coast for the solar eclipse so that we could see it in totality- what an absolutely otherworldly experience! It was like someone flipped a switch and the sky went dark in an instant.

I found three fun art projects for Isla and her cousin, Waverly, to do during our eclipse beach getaway, and they were SO MUCH FUN! To make the moon we started by cutting out a circle from water color paper. We then created raised craters/cracks with Elmer’s glue. Once the glue was dry the girls covered the moon with a grey water color wash and we sprinkled coarse salt over the wet paint for some added texture and interest. The eclipse picture was made by creating a reverse stencil- they placed a circular cut out on a piece of black construction paper and colored around it with white crayon. Then they added silver sequin stars, cause who doesn’t love a little bling?! The sun was made by “squish painting” and it was a huge hit! We cut out a circle of sturdy water color paper. Then the girls selected different shades of red, orange and yellow paint. We squeezed strips and dots of the different paint all over the paper. Next we carefully slid the paper into a gallon ziplock bag, sealed the bag, and let the girls squish the paint around with their fingers until the paper was fully covered. All the mess was contained and the color combinations and textures they created were just gorgeous. Not only were the projects entertaining, but they provided us with opportunities to talk to the girls about space and the eclipse. This is what happens when 4 educators go on vacation with their kids- ha!

Isla worked diligently on building our friendship with Safa… there was lots of progress over the summer months!

Isla started preschool! On the first morning she told me she was feeling a little sad, a little nervous, and excited. I felt the same way. These life changes are necessary, but hard. By the time we arrived at her school excitement had taken over and she was all smiles and ready to go! Watching her bravely march up the steps into the building and down to her classroom was simply incredible. I am so unbelievably proud of our sweet, sparkly, and incredibly adaptable little girl she has become.

We wrapped up the summer preparing for baby Cole. I was beyond thrilled to figure out how to transfer one of Isla’s drawings (Isla holding Cole) onto a onesie for her baby brother. It was the first onesie he ever wore!
