Happy Birthday Isaac!

Happy birthday, Isaac! Going forward this year we will now have spent more of your life together than apart. I like that. I am so incredibly grateful to navigate this crazy adventure of existence alongside you! The ups, downs, and in betweens are all so much better with you. Your kindness, thoughtfulness, drive, creativity, integrity and silly sense of humor inspire me every day. Thank you for the love and joy you bring to our lives. I am wishing you a year of happiness, stability, contentment, and the ability to find peace in any situation. I love you with all my heart!!!

We’ve been celebrating Isaac’s birthday the last few days, and it has been so wonderful! We started with the two of us enjoying a dinner date and the Bon Iver concert. Amazing! The next night we met up with dear friends for dinner and some games of pool. This morning we celebrated as a family with lots of snuggles, creative gifts, and a hearty breakfast of eggs benedict quiche, roasted asparagus, and mimosas.

Isla and Cole’s card featured the three of them collecting shells on the beach.

Cole was happy to help Daddo unwrap his presents.

Isla was SO EXCITED to give Daddo her gift. Oh. My. Goodness. The excitement on her face is just the best!!!

Isla has absolutely fallen in love with Tycho‘s music, thanks to her Daddo’s encouragement. A few months ago she started listening to the Awake album at bedtime each night, so she recreated the album art. She drew the circle, did all the painting, and the writing herself. I only helped with the lines, cutting, and a little spelling assistance. Love, love, love creating with this sweet girl!

Cole gifted Daddo with his very first painting! Hooray! We are thrilled to have another little artist in the family.

We had to go and get Isla’s first painting for comparison. We all couldn’t believe how similar the two paintings and photos were!

We love you more than space, Ikey! Happy, happy birthday! May this be your most wonderful year yet.

Spring on the Oregon Coast

We have been spending as much time at the cottage this spring as possible. It really is a lovely time of year on the Oregon coast. The tides are lower, there are many days without much wind, and the animal sightings are fantastic. This spring we enjoyed watching the humpback whales migrating. We spotted so many this year! They were so close to the shoreline at times that we could see their spouts and fins from our cottage! Piles of seals have been out sunning themselves along the mouth of the river. Pelicans flew past in low lines over the ocean, and flocks of darling sand pipers ran back and forth across the sand. Deer came to our front lawn at dawn and dusk to nibble the grass. Squirrels and chipmunks scurried along the brush line.  Hummingbirds and songbirds would flit around the bushes and perch along the telephone wires outside the cottage. The resident bald eagles have also made more frequent appearances. One perched on a log out in the middle of the lake to do a little fishing. It was incredible to see. We wish we had brought our telephoto lens with us though!

There are few things I love more than watching Isla on the beach. Her little soul is truly happiest here. Cole tried his first taste of sand…

He was not impressed.

We enjoyed a wonderful getaway with our friends Dan and Ashley. We first met when we worked together in Dubai and now we are all back in Portland and our boys were born 6 days apart! Cole is absolutely enamored with little Seb and could not keep his hands off him the whole weekend.

Isla’s favorite rock. She stops to greet it every time we walk to and from the beach.

Isla catching up with her barnacle friends. She told me this time that some of the barnacles were having their birthday that day. I figure there is a good chance that was accurate!

A new favorite photo of our girl and her barnacle friends (above).

Ashley found her first sand dollar ever on one of our our beach walks!

Isla also found her first sand dollar! She has “found” them before; we had noticed them first but left them for her to pick up. This time, however, she was the only one who saw the top of this sand dollar peeking out of the sand. She dug it up and was so excited!

Love this sweet baby shark! He is getting so close to crawling! He gets up on his knees and rocks back and forth, and also scooches across the floor in an inchworm-like manner. We aren’t encouraging any crawling progress, however, because once this busy boy becomes mobile life for this mom and dad is going to get a lot more challenging! We’re savoring these last few days where we can set him down in one spot and know he will (more or less) remain there.A quick morning beach visit. Isla brought her sand toys down and built a sand castle.

She creates with such passion and intention. It is so fun to watch the little wheels in her head turn as she works.

Cole decided to try sand again. This was apparently a much tastier variety than the last. So, I may have texted some people and told them there was a shark sighting at the beach, just so I could await their responses and then send them these photos.

On our most recent trip to the cottage we spent all of Sunday morning down on the beach and our experience was absolutely glorious. A leisurely stroll on the sand was just what our hearts needed. There was a negative tide that morning, so we had a massive expanse of shoreline to explore. The ocean must have been feeling pretty generous that morning, because the waves left behind countless treasures for us to find.

We made sure to spend some time visiting her barnacle friends. She found quite a few that had broken off the rock, so she scooped them up and tried to tuck them into little crevices in hopes they could continue living there. This girl has a heart of gold and she grows more aware and compassionate each day.

When we reached the mouth of the river we spent time watching 4 bald eagles. They were very vocal and you could hear their calls so clearly. They swooped back and forth over our heads, and at one point we witnessed 2 of them fighting mid-air!

Isla was thrilled to discover two large clam shells and instantly squealed, “Look, Mom! Booby shells! Just like Ariel!” She then proceeded to describe her grand plan of taking them home, coloring them purple, and using tape and string to create her own “booby shell top” so that she could emulate her favorite mermaid. I love this kid and how quickly she can find inspiration to create. I also had to laugh when she began telling us about her project, because I also made my own seashell mermaid top when I was little.

We collected a ton on our walk: 25 sand dollars, about a dozen teeny sand dollars, agates, rocks, snail shells, mussels, hollowed out barnacle shells, and more! Isla’s collection bag was stuffed full, and though it was heavy, she carried it the whole walk. She’s such a strong and dedicated collector! Like Isla’s collection bag, our hearts were bursting at the seams after our relaxing morning on the beach. We are so very grateful to call this magical place home. We’re already counting the days until we are back!

Tulip Festival & Tulip Stamping Craft

After a long, dreary stretch of rainfall last month, the sun finally reappeared in Portland. Hooray! We celebrated with a trip to the Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival, and it was absolutely gorgeous! Row after row of brilliant blooms stretched to the horizon. Nana, Auntie Leah, Cali and baby Selah joined us for few hours of exploring, and we had such a fantastic time together.

We love to think up art projects that correspond with our adventures, and had such a great time creating tulip stamps out of potatoes! Instructions for this project are at the end of this post.

A dedicated collector everywhere we go, Isla picked up just about every fallen tulip petal she saw.

After spending time in the flower fields, Isla had so much fun running around the kids area. She scaled the rock wall countless times and then tried out this crazy bouncer. She had a ball!

Inspired by the gorgeous blooms at the tulip festival, we made tulip stamps using potatoes! Isla stamped the sweetest cards and then gifted them to her nanas for Mother’s Day.

To make stamped tulip cards of your own you’ll need:

  • at least two sturdy potatoes (1 for the flowers and 1 for the stems)
  • a sharp pairing knife
  • a few sheets of paper (to draw the tulip outlines and test the stamps)
  • pencil
  • scissors
  • paper towels
  • small art sponge
  • acrylic paint (green for stems and any color(s) you’d like for the petals)
  • nice, thick greeting card (these are similar to what we used)

First, Isla practiced sketching some tulips on a piece of the scratch paper. We chose two of her favorites to use as templates for the stamps and loosely cut around the chosen tulip designs with scissors.

Next, cut one potato in half with the pairing knife. Lay the designs against the flat, cut side of potato and then carefully trace around the design with the tip of the knife (so you are actually cutting through the paper). This will make a faint outline on the potato. You can then pull the paper off and trace the design with the knife to make a deeper cut. Finally, remove the excess potato around the design to a depth of about 1/4″.

Pat the stamp dry on some paper towels. Use the sponge to apply the paint to the tulip stamp. We blended a peach and an orangy-red color for added interest.

Practice a few stamps on a page of the scratch paper to ensure you are using the right amount of paint and applying the appropriate level of pressure. It takes a little practice to get them just right.

That sweet smile of success!

When you feel confident in your practice stamping, start stamping flowers on the cards. We made cards with single tulips and clusters of 3 tulips.

In addition to the cards, Isla made a picture of a row of tulips, “just like at the tulip festival.” We loved how it turned out so much that we are framing it and will use it in our yearly spring decor.

To make the stems, I cut a longer potato lengthwise and followed the same process outlined above to cut a stem shape. We added the green stem stamps once the flowers were dry (we did this the next day and forgot to take photos).

Here’s a finished card! We just love how they turned out, and are already brainstorming some other potato stamps to try out. Let us know if you try some potato stamps of your own. We’d love to see what you create!

Happy Mother’s Day 2018!

Mother’s Day 2018 was a sweet, sweet celebration. It was a quiet day filled with quality family time, tasty food, a little pampering, lots of sunshine, and some very thoughtful and creative gifts. I feel so grateful for my incredible children, thoughtful husband, selfless mother, caring mother in law, and the wonderfully gracious “extra moms” in my life who have shown me love and guidance throughout the years.

Our morning started early, thanks to Cole, our resident morning person. Thankfully, he is sleeping through the night, but those 5:00am wake ups are still a bit tough. Anyhow, we were up with the sun, so we made a lovely breakfast for my mom, I assembled a bouquet from the garden (so excited we still had some lilac blooms!), and then Mom and I headed out for pedicures.

Isla made darling popsicle stick planters for each of her nanas! I took her to the craft store and she picked two paints for each planter, based on her nanas’ favorite colors. After painting the popsicle sticks, I helped her hot glue them to a large tin can. Then we took a trip to the local nursery and she picked out the perfect plants for each. She also made the darling stamped tulip card using a potato! I’ll share more on that process in a separate post soon.

After Mom and I returned from our pedicures, Isaac and the kiddos spoiled me with the most thoughtful and artistic gifts! Each year since Isla was old enough to hold a paintbrush, she and Isaac have collaborated on a Mother’s Day art project for me. They feature Isla’s painting, and Isaac hand letters the “I love you” saying Isla has used most frequently that year. When she was one she would say, “I yuh you.” Heart-melting, right?! Then when she was two she would say, “You make my heart so happy.” Last year she became enamored with Jack Prelutzky’s poem, “I love you more than applesauce,” so that became our favorite thing to say to each other. This year, fueled by her fascination of the natural world, she determined space (and the universe) to be the biggest thing there is, and so she now says, “I love you more than space!”  I am over the moon thrilled that this has become a tradition! Yes, pun intended. The sweetest card! I was so excited to have one of her beautiful tulip cards to call my own. Isla was SO proud to have done all the writing by herself. Baby girl, I love you more than the whole universe too!

How amazing are these are these gorgeous name necklaces?! The best part is they are in Isaac’s handwriting! They are such a beautiful reminder of my three favorite people. I am obsessed!!! Daddo creativity for the win! Thank you, thank you, thank you! For those of you inspired to create your own custom jewelry gifts, this is the shop Isaac worked with.

More thoughtful Mother’s Day treats that I love!

I cannot wait to enjoy some wine and cheese down at the cottage with this fun new cheese board!

And speaking of wine and cheese, Isaac prepared this lovely little lunch, which we enjoyed on the front porch while the kiddos were napping/resting. Then Nana stayed on kid watch for us so we could sneak away for a few minutes and pick up my favorite coffee treat.

Cat photo bomb. Not specifically Mother’s Day related, but I just love these two together! I also cannot get enough of Cole throwing back his bottle with one hand!

Cole admiring my new pedicure.

We spent the evening in the backyard, enjoying the gorgeous weather and lots of happy snuggles. Isaac took some portraits of the kids with me, and I am really grateful he did. Like many other mothers out there, I am not super keen on being in front of the camera, but these photos are SO important. My children deserve to have these moments preserved, regardless of my own discomfort about the extra chub I’m carrying around. I want them to be able to look back through these photos and see how I gazed at them with so much adoration. I want them to remember how sweet their little hands looked tucked into mine, and what it felt like to be small enough to curl up in my lap. This is what I will see when I look through these photos too. The love and connection we share is far more important than looking perfect. I look at her and my heart nearly beats right out of my chest. So in love with this sparkly girl, and I still think her giggles are the best sound I have ever heard.

His happy smiles absolutely melt my heart. He grows sweeter by the day and I adore his dimpled baby paws. Love this baby bear with all my heart!

Happy Mother’s Day to all of you who have loved and made a difference in the life of a child.

Favorite Spring Picture Books

We love charming picture books, and enjoy discovering wonderful new stories to add to our library. We keep most of Isla’s books in her room year-round, but have a collection of seasonal and holiday books that we rotate in and out. It is so exciting to rediscover our seasonal books every year; reading through each familiar story wraps us in a warm, nostalgic hug. It is also such a thrill to find wonderful new tales to add to our collection. We are so happy to share about a few of our recent favorite spring picture books with you!

The Easter Bunny brought Isla Stories from Bug Garden this year, and it is the most darling collection of stories featuring different bugs that live in the an old abandoned garden. The whimsical, expressive artwork pairs perfectly with each delightful tale. This book has become a fast favorite in our household, and honestly, we love it more every time we read it (which is often).

Isla was absolutely enamored with the story about Roly Poly, so she was thrilled to discover one when we were pulling weeds the other day. Being quite the cautious little bug, it stayed rolled tightly in a ball for a long time, inspiring Isla to name it Little Scaredy. She patiently waited for Little Scaredy to unroll, and then giggled like crazy as its tiny feet tickled her hands.

When I was a little girl I kept roly poly bugs as pets. Yes, seriously. I actually discovered the following book a few months ago and had been storing it away in our gift bin, but this seemed like the perfect opportunity to share it with Isla.

Hank’s Big Day follows Hank, a roly poly, through his daily routine. The highlight of his day is playing with his adventurous human friend, Amelia.

What friendship looks like. Could this illustration of Hank and Amelia gazing at each other be any sweeter?!

I’ve started compiling a list of our most favorite spring picture books on Pinterest in case you’d like to check them out. Happy reading!
