Digging for Thunder Eggs at Richardson Rock Ranch

The minute we learned about Richardson Rock Ranch, Isla and I began dreaming up a trip to dig for thunder eggs. We made a trip to visit family in central Oregon last month, so it was the perfect opportunity to stop in Madras and visit the ranch.

We arrived to the rock shop just before 2:45pm. This is the firm cut off time for going out to dig, as you are expected to leave the beds by 4:30pm and leave the ranch by 5:00pm. After signing in, we were given picks, a simple hand-drawn map, and safety instructions about where to dig. In our rush, we totally forgot to take buckets with us, but they have plenty of those on hand for you to use as well. We hopped back in car and drove another 20 minutes until we reached our desired rock bed. We passed through pastures (the ranch also raises cattle) and as we drew closer to the rock beds, the terrain became dry and rocky- a good sign! While the folks at the rock ranch don’t advise waiting until the last minute to go out into the beds like we did, we found that with two small kiddos, 45 minutes was the perfect amount of time to dig, so thankfully everything worked out just fine! The thunder eggs were so prevalent and easy to dig up (some were just laying out on the ground!) we had no trouble collecting an armful in just over a half an hour. When collecting at the ranch, you use the honor system and pay for your rocks when you return to the rock shop. There is a $12.50 minimum, which is about 12 tangerine-sized thunder eggs.

Cole got a kick out of holding the thunder eggs and, of course, tasted every single one we handed him.

We keep doing double takes when we look at Isla because she has grown up so much in the past few months! Her legs are stretched out long, like a big kid’s, and her knees are no longer pudgy and dimpled. Oh, my heart! I’d really just like time to slow down.

Our thunder egg haul.

Our proud little collector!

When we returned from the rock beds we actually had a few minutes to spare, and so we were able to have a few of our thunder eggs cut open while we explored the vast rock shop. It is absolutely loaded, both inside and out, with rocks and products made from rocks (jewelry, statues, candle holders, figurines, etc.) from all over the world. Isla went crazy looking at all of the wonderful treasures, and I was able to sneak a few items up to the counter without her noticing, which we will surprise her with on her birthday next month.

Our experience at the Richardson Rock Ranch was just wonderful, and I have no doubt we will go on more digs there in the future!

August on the Oregon Coast

Like July, we spent much of August at our cottage on the coast. A big highlight for us was the annual Marshall family beach week!

Early in August, Isaac’s grandpa Roger passed away. To honor his life, our whole family spent a beautiful day together doing things that Roger loved. First we collected agates because he was quite the rock hound and enjoyed making jewelry. Then we rode the Oregon Coast scenic train from Garibaldi to Rockaway and back to honor the years Roger worked on the Southern Pacific Railroad. On the way back to the cottage and cabin, we made a stop at the newly renovated Tillamook Cheese Factory because, well, who doesn’t love ice cream? Finally, we wrapped up the evening with a family BBQ and shared stories about Grandpa.

Our first trip to Oceanside did not disappoint! All of the girls found agates and they were so excited. We happily dug through the rocks for several hours and cheered for one another whenever another shiny treasure was uncovered. We had such a wonderful morning together!

We had such a fantastic time on the Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad! The train ambles along between Garibaldi and Rockaway, providing views of the ocean, bay, and forest. The trip takes about 2 hours there and back, with a 30 minute stop in the middle. It was just perfect for small kiddos- and the tired adults who care for them!

Baby bear loved his first train ride. He was absolutely fascinated, and was constantly whipping his head around, surveying our surroundings as they passed by. Before long the swaying of the car and the clacking of the tracks lulled him to sleep.

The girls had a ball waving at cars and pedestrians from the train. A few of the adults got really into it as well!

At our stop in Rockaway, saltwater taffy was purchased and it was a big hit!

The saltwater taffy struggle is real… but so worth it! Isla was super excited to sample saltwater taffy for the first time… and second time… and third time.

They were giving out generous scoops at Tillamook!

The next day we all traveled down to one of our very favorite places on the Oregon Coast: the Newport Aquarium. We all had such a fantastic time exploring the exhibits.

Uncle Josh had us all cracking up as he checked his wingspan!

Our sweet friend, Teresa, brought out some skins, jaws, teeth and eggs for the girls to touch and learn about. We feel so fortunate to have such wonderful buddies at the aquarium!

We enjoyed numerous beach walks during the week, and the girls always came home soaking wet and covered in sand from all of their wave jumping and puddle splashing.

The magic of the hiking pack! I’m not sure Cole has ever stayed awake long enough to see the mouth of the river during our walks.

Mia found her first sand dollar on this walk!

A long beach walk, her collection bag filled with treasures, her cousins, and a bunch of little tide pools to splash in: pretty much Isla’s ideal day!

I guess you could say Duke was a fan of the beach. This sweet little guy crashed hard every night after all of the running and retrieving he did on our walks.

In the summer we are fortunate to have large tide pools form on the beach. They make the perfect place for the kiddos to play.

Wrapping up an evening with s’mores… on the BBQ because bon fires were temporarily banned on the beach. Whatever works!

They were the BEST s’mores ever, because in place of the graham crackers and chocolate we used homemade brickle. YUM!!! We made this brickle recipe (minus the heath bars) and it was so tasty! We cannot wait to experiment further with the recipe… I’m thinking flake salt, hazelnuts, slivered almonds… so many tasty possibilities!

We feel so fortunate for the wonderful memories made during this family beach week, and we’re already looking forward to next summer!

Later in the month, Grauntie, Gruncle, and Nana joined us for a work weekend at the cottage. We knew we had a leaky window in Isla’s room that needed to be replaced, but we had no idea just how much damage that leak had done. Dry rot and ants galore! Yuck! We are so very grateful for skilled and patient family members who are so generous with their time and talents! It was a BIG project, but now we have a new, properly sealed window, new sub-floor, new drywall, a mostly new exterior wall and trim, and far fewer ants- pest control is next on the to do list!

I forgot to take a “finished” photo, but everything looks great now!

We enjoyed beach walks every day. Oh, how we loooooove our beach walks!

“I’m making up a story about myself. It’s a brave story. It’s about strongness.” Isla scampered along the shoreline with so much intensity and purpose it was clear her imagination was hard at work.

Later, as we greeted a tide pool filled with anemones, Isla told me, “I shake their little hands to say hello.” Then she shook her head and giggled, “They don’t have brains… they have no idea what I’m doing.”

Isla has become quite the sand dollar collector this summer!

Isla tends to create up a storm while we’re at the cottage. On the left is the art gallery she set up in our room. On the right is a (in progress) beach she made out of play dough and her collections. The finished sculpture was really impressive!

We enjoyed our morning at Oceanside earlier in the month so much that we decided to go back with Daddo so that he could hunt for agates with us!

So many treasures to be found!

Not everyone is cut out for a full morning of serious agate hunting 😉

After agate hunting we had lunch at The Blue Agate. Isla had fish and chips and raved about how they were the best thing she had ever tasted all day!

Our agates (left) and Isla’s agates (right)

First sibling practical joke is in the books… first of many, we suspect!

Every time we walk to and from the beach Isla stops to greet “her favorite rock” on the path. It’s flat and large enough for her to stand on. When she does, her little toes curl around the edge. She admires the rock for a few moments, then kisses her hand, squats down, and pats the rock. This girl is something else, and I am so incredibly grateful for her loving heart.

An impromptu blackberry picking trip with Daddo lead to an impromptu baking session with Mommy. We made the most amazing blackberry peach upside down skillet cake! We followed this recipe, except we doubled the almond extract (yum!) and added a diced peach to the blackberries.

We normally go for long collecting walks on the beach, but on this particular morning we just walked a short distance and then splashed around in the water. Cole has played in the tide pools before, but this was his first time dipping his toes in the surf. He LOVED those waves, especially the big ones that splashed up his legs!

And yes, baby boy was rocking a sand beard. Hooray for summers on the coast!

August Highlights

The final days of summer are here, and once again we find ourselves wondering where the time has gone?! August was a jam-packed month for us, both with work and with play. Perhaps we’ll find some time to sleep this fall?

We made several trips out to the sweetest little drive-in along the Sandy River, called Sugarpine. The food is both delicious and gorgeous! Get their hazelnut brickle topping on your ice cream. I promise, you won’t be disappointed!

A lovely little stroll around Bridal Veil Falls after all that ice cream…

Our friends, Brian, Nicky and Sam, were in town from Florida, and we had such a great time sharing a little sliver of our home state with them. Cole was beyond fascinated with Sam, and couldn’t keep his hands off of him. Sorry, Sam! We’ll keep working on that personal space concept.

Backyard BBQ and a slip-‘n-slide: the quintessential summer experience!

Epic towing/launching services provided by Uncle Chad.

Isla has been asking Toni and Chad if the plums were ripe every time we’ve seen them for the past year. Literally. Needless to say, when she asked once more and heard that magical, “yes,” she was beyond thrilled!

Cole tried his first plum… actually, he devoured his first plum. Then he brushed up on his yard game skills.

Nana got the kiddos this sweet little pool, and it was great fun on sunny afternoons!

Madelyn brought her new puppy, Tinker, over one evening! Pool and a puppy. Does it get much better than that?!

To wrap up pool time, we gave Madelyn the hose. Cole retreated to a safe distance and watched from there. Smart kid!

Raspberry Picking with Gruncle

Each summer since we moved home 3 years ago, Isla and Gruncle have picked raspberries together. And every year I can’t help but follow along behind them and take photos. It is the sweetest little tradition and I just love seeing these two together!

We spent the first half of July at the coast, so we barely made by the end of the season. Thankfully, just enough berries hung on for Isla and Gruncle! They started with the red raspberries and then moved onto the gold. To boost their haul a bit they also picked a few blackberries and blueberries. Per usual, just as many berries were consumed while picking as made it back inside the house.

Another successful berry picking adventure for these two. Their next harvesting adventure: pumpkins! I’m doing by best to be fully present and enjoy the summer, but I am so excited for fall already I can hardly stand it!

July at the Oregon Coast

We feel so fortunate to have enjoyed half of July at our cottage on the Oregon Coast! Our days were spent together with our toes in the sand and the salt air in our lungs. Pretty much the perfect combination for this family!

Cole has been pulling himself up on everything these days!

On one particularly dreamy afternoon we took the kids down to the lake outlet to play. The water level was really low, but it was just perfect for Cole!

Isla was earning all sorts of style points for her fancy jumps into 2 inches of water!

The face of exhaustion!

Then he ate a little more sand and was all smiles!

Morning meditation time on the front porch with Daddo. So sweet! I love that these two share this practice together.

Isla befriended a slow moving bumble bee and spent some time observing it on a clover in the front yard.

Checking in with her barnacle friends.

Wavy and her family joined us for a few days and the girls had an absolute ball together!

Isla and Wavy are both fascinated by the kids’ baking challenge show and have been begging to have their own baking challenge. Cheryl and I set up a cookie making station for the girls and let them create to their hearts’ content! We then did a taste test and “judged” their final cookies. It was great fun!

Squeezing lemons Giada De Laurentiis style!

Later that afternoon we drove down to Newport to explore the Oregon Coast Aquarium!

It was the first trip where Cole was aware enough of his surroundings to enjoy the experience. Inside the tunnels he was absolutely transfixed!

Two of the lowest tides of the entire year occurred during our stay. They both happened to take place early in the morning, so we hauled ourselves out of bed while the sun was rising and made our way down to the beach. The coast was completely socked in and the tide was way out, which gave our familiar shoreline a totally otherworldly appearance.

Looking at our rocks from the west. The ocean is usually where we are standing, and so this is not a common view. It was still a few hundred yards behind me when I took this photo.

The girls had the best finding sand dollars! They were darting back and forth and cheering happily with each sand dollar they found. Altogether we brought in more than 70. Wavy found her first sand dollar (and many more) on this walk, and we enjoyed celebrating her exciting milestone.

The sun came out in the afternoon and this little tide pool was just perfect for the kids to splash around in.

Up again with the sun for the second day of record low tides. Nana Sandy joined us for this walk.

I’m pretty sure the girls managed to jump over or into every puddle on the beach!

Isla: The barnacles are telling me there are more sand dollars around here.

Me: (Looking around and not seeing any sand dollars) Are they buried?

Isla: Yes.

Isla to the barnacles: What’s your strategy to get them out? (Furrows her brow and listens intently) Dig with your hands and feet? Oh, I can do that!

Never a dull moment with this girl and her barnacle friends.

Someone constructed this gorgeous driftwood teepee near the mouth of the river and the girls had a great time playing in it. Within seconds of stepping inside they were busy weaving together an imaginary storyline and magical new identities. Isla harvested “zucchini leaves” outside to prepare a pretend feast.

Nana Jan gifted Isla her first kite and she absolutely LOVED flying it! She walked all the way to the mouth of the river with the kite bobbing above her head. A big thanks to her Nana for buying this on a whim. Perhaps the best $4 ever spent!

We celebrated our 12th anniversary at the cottage and after a lovely breakfast (thanks, Nana!) hiked the kids up the hill to our ceremony site and stood on the spot where we exchanged vows. The coast was completely socked in, unlike our wedding day when we had the most stunning views of the Pacific Ocean from this hillside.

Isla treated me to a manicure! She was so proud, and I loved her gesture so much I kept my nails exactly how she painted them for over a week! Isaac and I slipped away for an afternoon at Salishan Spa and dinner at Kyllo’s. We enjoyed relaxing massages, soaks in the outdoor hot tub, amazing meals, and shared some of the best conversation we have ever had. Our time together was absolutely perfect!

That night, things took a turn for the worst. It was so hilariously terrible that I had to journal it:

9:00pm Isaac’s stomach started churning. It got steadily worse, and we began suspecting food poisoning. Following is a timeline of events for the rest of the night:

11:00pm After helping Isaac as best as I can, he decides to camp out on the couch to ride out his nausea, and I go to bed.

11:15pm I am startled awake by Isaac throwing up (poor guy!). I get up and get him a cold compress, ice water, some peppermint oil. He is, thankfully, feeling better and says he wants to take a shower, so I go back to bed.

11:30pm Isla begins throwing up in her sleep. Okay, so we’re clearly not dealing with food poisoning. She throws up A TON all over her cot, herself, her pillow and both blankets on her bed. I get her up and into the bathroom. Isaac, was able to hop right into action (he’s a saint!), starts cleaning up her bed, getting the laundry going, and bleaching the floor. I draw a bath for Isla and dig around in the dark (Cole is also sleeping in our room, and I don’t want to wake him) to find her new clothes. Then I dig around and find more blankets and a new pillow to remake Isla’s bed. Isla is an incredible trooper through it all. We finish a short bath, get her teeth brushed, some fresh water, and put her back to bed. We go to bed and my heart is racing so I really can’t get to sleep.

12:30am: Just as I begin to doze off, Isla begins throwing up AGAIN. And once again she manages to throw up on every single item in her bed (minus herself this time). We begin the cleaning process once more. While I’m down bleaching the floor, Cole wakes up and starts crying. I pause my clean up, go and scrub my hands, and make him a bottle. I leave him in his crib with his bottle so that I can resume clean up. Everything smells horrific. I start bleaching the counters, doors, handles of the bathroom and kitchen sink. I empty garbage cans. I start another load of laundry. As I am cleaning, Isla tells Isaac she needs to throw up again, so he coached her through that misery in the bathroom (seriously, he is a saint).

Somewhere around 1:30am: We get Isla all cleaned up and put back to bed (with a giant bowl next to her). Cole is still awake. Now wide awake. I make him another bottle and begin his bedtime routine over again. I lay him in his bed, and thankfully, he doesn’t fuss. He does toss and turn for the next half hour or so, but makes it off to bed.

Well after 2:00am: I finally fall asleep, but I startle awake at every noise, fearing someone is starting to vomit.

6:30am: Cole is awake for the day. I get up with him to let the poor troops sleep more. As I pick him up I smell something awful. It turns out to be a massive blown out diaper, with diarrhea up his back and coating his jammies and sleep sack. I start changing his diaper. Cole thinks it is the perfect time to play keep away. I get him cleaned, changed, and into his high chair. I do another load of laundry… bleach some more…

I started feeling poorly mid-day. I spent the next few days in bed, feeling weak and yucky, but somehow managed to avoid throwing up. My poor mom was hit with it a day later. Oi! What a wild ride that was. Let’s hope it bolstered our immune systems and we steer clear of any more germs for a long, long time!!!

Despite the unfortunate ending to our July stay at the beach, we are so very grateful for our own little slice of heaven along this stunning coastline and the time we get to spend there as a family! We’re looking forward to spending much of August there as well- healthy and happy.
