A Walk in the Forest

Our word of the year has been intention. We have making efforts to be more intentional about the choices we make, the thoughts that enter our heads, the way we solve problems, the energy we invest in our business, and most importantly, the way we spend our time as a family. We want our time together to be just that: time together. We want to be engaged and interacting with one another, and free from outside distractions.

One of the easiest and most enjoyable ways our family connects is by taking a walk. Whether we’re meandering through our neighborhood, making a lap around the local park, or strolling on the coast, we really love walking together. Technology gets tucked away, and we focus our senses on each other and the world around us. We share the ideas that have been floating in our heads. We search for interesting collections. We make plans for future adventures. We talk through our dreams and visions for the future. Walks are a really magical time for the four of us.

On a recent trip to the cottage we decided to forgo our usual daily beach walk, and instead explore a nearby forested hillside. It was so exciting to share this little adventure as a family and experience someplace new together.

A few minutes into our walk, Isaac spotted this little rough skinned newt. Of course, Isla instantly fell in love and asked to hold it.

Cole was reaching for every low hanging leaf he could!

Years ago, someone drug this old rowboat up the hillside and left it. Over the years it filled with forest debris, which made the perfect bed for various plants and small trees to take up residence.

As the forest opened, blackberry briars began lining the path. Isaac and Isla had a fabulous time picking and eating!

A break in the trees allowed us to take a peek at the lake and coastline below. We look out over these bodies of water every day from the cottage, but it is nice to have a little change of perspective.

Hello, Wayfarer Cottage! Our little slice of heaven is right in the middle of the photo, behind the two large trees.

We found another newt friend as we finished our hike. This little one was attempting to make it across the road, so we helped it along in it’s journey… after giving it a little love, of course. Isla had a smile plastered across her blackberry-stained face the entire time!

I know it sounds completely crazy to say, but this little newt really seemed to like Isla, and it hung out quite contentedly on her arm.

After picking Newty the newt off of the road, and giving it a few minutes of snuggles, Isla found a nice patch of damp grass and leaves, far from the danger of tires, to place her little friend. This photo makes my heart melt, and has quickly taken its place as an all-time favorite. I just love her sweet body language, and the tenderness of her hands as she coaxes the newt on its way. We are so thankful for this little girl and her enormous heart!

I look through this collection of photos and cannot help but feel an overwhelming sense of love and gratitude! I am also so proud of our family for continually working to connect and live our lives with intention. Our time together is the greatest gift we have!

Baby Bear’s 1st Birthday Party

As Cole’s first birthday approached, we began talking through ideas for his party. We always try to plan parties for our kids that are reflective of their particular interests or life stages. We started calling Cole “baby bear” shortly after he was born, so working with a theme around his nickname seemed like a perfect fit. It was so much fun pulling together all of the details and prepping for the party with our family (a huge thanks to Grauntie and Gruncle for allowing us to host at their house, and to Nana for all of her help!). We had the BEST time celebrating our baby bear’s first year with a tasty end of summer BBQ, balloons, and an epic cake smash.

Keeping with the bear theme, we created a menu that was inspired by a bear’s diet: salmon, berries, and greens. Whatever didn’t fall into that category was cut into bear shapes. Ha! I’ll include recipes at the end of the post. They are so good!

One of the hardest things for us to do when we’re planning a party is use pre-made decor and stationary. I know, it sounds silly. We just really love the creative process of making our own designs, but we had so much going on leading up to Cole’s birthday that we decided to outsource our invitations and paper products. It was the best decision!

We purchased these adorable watercolor bear themed goodies from Prints for Events and loved them! I loaded the two 5×7 designs into the card designer on Paperless Post, so that we could send the invitations digitally. The bear with the party hat on the left was the front of the invitation and the bear face with all the details was the back of the invitation. This is the second time we’ve turned our custom designs into digital invitations on Paperless Post, and we love being able to manage all of the details, questions, and RSVP’s in one place!

We tweaked a few of the paw tags to make menu cards and signage for the food table.

The kiddos were welcome to the full spread, but we also put together a few basic options, like turkey and cheese sandwiches, goldfish (labeled as fresh fish- ha!), and pretzels, for the little mouths that didn’t yet appreciate salmon.

These cocoa crispies bear treats were super easy to put together and so tasty! We just used the recipe on the side of the box and cut out the treats with the same bear cookie cutter we used for the sandwiches.

I used Magnolia Bakery’s vanilla cupcake recipe (so yummy!) and topped them with fresh berries and these sweet little “Feed the Bears” topper.

All the decor was centered around a palette of black, white, and burlap, with some raw wood details. We picked up a few sunflowers and white hydrangeas for the larger arrangements, and found most of the remaining greenery and flowers around my mom’s house, and my aunt and uncle’s property.

We had nearly 100 of our favorite photos from Cole’s first year printed, and displayed as many as we could at the party. We are putting all of these photos in a keepsake box for Cole to have.

Before a party, we’re always up late the night before finishing one project or another! For this party, it was the chocolate almond bear paw favors. My mom and I had such a fabulous time together creating these tasty little treats. We lined a sheet pan with wax paper. On the paper, we sketched the outline of the paws using pencil. Then we melted chocolate chips in the microwave, put them into a ziplock, and piped a layer of chocolate over each bear paw outline. Mom carefully laid the almond “toenails” onto the ends of each paw, and then I piped another layer of chocolate over the top of the paws (to help secure the almonds and add more of a 3D shape) and smoothed it with an offset spatula.

We blew up black and white balloons and scattered them around the yard. Seriously, you can’t go wrong with balloons and kiddos! We also set up a little craft table where the kids could make necklaces (twine and honeycomb cereal) and a little nature scavenger hunt sheet with these darling wooden pencils.

I made this simple baby bear shirt with my silhouette machine and an iron-on vinyl transfer.

Sweet friends!

I used the same vanilla cake and frosting recipe for Cole’s cake as the cupcakes. Cole has not had many sweets before, so he wasn’t really sure what to do with the cake.

He did, however, recognize the berries on his cake, and quickly went to work picking some strawberries off the cake and eating them.

It didn’t take long for Cole to get in to smashing his cake. It was SO hilarious to watch!

After exerting all that energy on obliterating his cake, our baby bear decided the remaining bits were the best place to lay his head down for a little rest!

After a quick bath and wardrobe change, we gathered together with all our friends for presents. Cole received so many fun and thoughtful gifts!

Isla did chores to earn money so that she could buy Cole a birthday present. She was so excited to have this opportunity, and was constantly asking what she could do to help. After some deliberation, Isla decided she wanted to buy Cole his first teddy bear, and literally looked at dozens before deciding upon one that was both cute and huggable. Watching The joy spread across Isla’s face as she gave Cole his bear may have been the best thing we have ever seen!

Cole’s reaction to his new bear was pretty darn precious too!

Our baby bear’s birthday was such a sweet and joyful day. We are so grateful to have had the opportunity to celebrate our ONE year old with so many of our nearest and dearest!

Additional Resources and Recipes:

Black and White Gingham Table Cloths

5×5 Square Prints (we used our professional printer, but similar prints can be found here)

The Best Grilled Salmon (I double the marinade recipe. I use half on the fish and put the other half in a small sauce pan and reduce it. Just before serving I drizzle some of the reduction over the salmon. This recipe is seriously amazing! Not one bite of the three giant fillets we prepared was left!)

Corn Pudding (one of our go-to favorite side dishes. We serve this with salmon and also alongside tacos!)

Happy First Birthday, Cole!

“You are a dream that the world once dreamt and now you are part of its song. That’s why you are here, in the place where you’re meant, for this is right where you belong.”- M.H. Clark

Our sweet Cole, we can hardly believe you are one! How is that possible? This past year has felt like both the longest and shortest of our lives, but we sure are glad you are here and part of our family. We love you so much, baby bear!

It is so exciting to see your spunky personality develop more as you grow, learn, and explore the world around you. You have a wonderfully quirky sense of humor and we love your playful sideways glances. We think you might be the smiliest baby on the planet, and we are so grateful for your joyful spirit and adorable belly laughs. You have a strong sense of curiosity and you are incredibly observant. Mechanics fascinate you, and you spend a lot of time investigating how parts work together- we can see the little wheels in your mind turning! You have a twinkle in your eye, loads of determination, and you are a boundary-pusher already- especially when it comes to touching electrical outlets and putting everything you find in your mouth.

Your favorite person in the world is Isla. You absolutely light up whenever you see her! She can make you laugh harder than anyone else. Watching the two of you playing together, and hearing your shared giggles, fills our hearts to overflowing. We are just thrilled to see the bond you have formed already, and cannot wait to see the love and friendship you two will develop over the years.

You adore our kitties too. You used to snuggle your head on Miller every time you saw him. He was so very patient with you, and we think he felt all the love you were giving him. Now that our precious Miller is gone, you give Safa all of that affection. He is slowly getting used to it, and we think he might actually be enjoying your snuggles now… a little bit. Often times I will pet him and feel wet patches on his back. After a while I realized they are from your sweet kisses! We bet it won’t be too long until you win Safa over.

You have one volume: loud. We are choosing to be grateful for your yelling, as it is a sign that your lungs, which were not working so well at your birth, are now strong and healthy. Most of your vocabulary consists of baby babble, but you have a few words that you like to say regularly; “I-ya!” (Isla) being your favorite. You start calling for your sister the minute you wake up. You also occasionally call, “I-zih!” (Isaac) for your Daddo. You put your hand or toy phone up to your ear and say “Huh-wo?” You love, love, love when we cheer for you. You bob your head to the beat as we say, “Go, Cole, go!” and then you repeat the words after us. Once when we were driving to the beach you started shouting, “Bear!” from your car seat. We thought it was especially sweet that bear was one of your first words, since we have called you our baby bear from the start. You say, “Nana, no, no” and that makes Nana laugh. Technically, your first word was “Mama.” You said it regularly for several months and then stopped. Now when we try and get you to say Mama, you grin and respond, “Cole.” We think this is because I will point to myself and say “Mama,” and then point to you and say, “Cole.” How funny of you to have turned that identification lesson into a little game. Your mama is eagerly awaiting for “Mama” to return to your vocabulary. You also like to say, “Goo, goo… ga, ga!” using a very rhythmic beat.

Speaking of rhythm, Cole, you already have it! Music is so clearly ingrained in you. You love to listen to music, dance, drum on everything, and even sing. Whenever you hear a good, solid beat you grin and begin to bob your head and bounce your body. Nana brought out her keyboard for you to play with a few months ago, and you have spent many happy hours playing on it- literally, you sit on top of it, and plink away on the keys. You love to play with Daddo’s guitar and Isla’s ukuleles. When you strum the strings and hear the sounds they make, the biggest smile spreads across your face. Just about any surface becomes a drum for you, and we are truly impressed with how long you can keep a beat going. Perhaps you will be a drummer like your Daddo? Your favorite song is “If you’re happy and you know it.” (The Itsy Bitsy spider and Skidamarink-a-dink-a-dink are close seconds). Around 11 months you started really clapping your hands, and you get such a kick out of giving us high-fives.

When we take walks around the neighborhood, you sit straight up in your stroller, hands gripping the tray, and your eyes intently scanning everything around us. Your posture and the back of your little head looks so darn cute we can hardly stand it! We know it won’t be long until you are walking along beside us on these outings, so we will enjoy watching you perched in your stroller as much as we can in the meantime! You aren’t showing a ton of interest in walking yet, but you love to move and can crawl all over at lightning-speed. The past few months you’ve been pulling yourself up on everything and furniture surfing. You’ve stood up on your own a few times. The first time you did, you threw your hands up in the air, and yelled, “I-ya!” It was amazing. We have no doubt you will be up and running before too long.

Food is a pretty big source of joy in your life and you are an excellent eater. You love milk, and totally crack us up when you lean way back in your highchair and hold your bottle with one hand. You eat just about everything, but recent favorites have included grilled zucchini, cheese, peach, turkey, bananas, and cheerios.

You are still figuring out how to sleep through the night. We’ll be honest, we’ve never been more tired than we have this past year- but, sweet Cole, you are completely worth it! When you wake up in the wee hours of the morning, you let us know, by angrily yelling at the top of your lungs until we come to you with a bottle. We’ve gone through one round of sleep training with you, and had some excellent results for a few months. Then teething started, you needed some extra comforting, and all our hard work went out the window. Round two of sleep training will be starting soon, and we are confident you will put up a spirited fight. We are determined, however, because we keep imagining how wonderful it will be when you can sleep through the night again- when we all can sleep through the night again.

Teething has been a fairly rough experience for you. You have 8 teeth already (4 on top, 4 on bottom) and you are a drool machine. Your poor little chin is so red and irritated all the time, but it doesn’t damper your happy spirit at all.

The cottage is such a special place to our family, and we love bringing you there. You watch the ocean intently, eat sand like it’s your life’s calling, and are rocked to sleep in your hiking pack every time we take a long walk along the shore. You happily splash in the tide pools and squeal when we dip your toes in the waves. You are definitely a water baby! Bath time is your favorite, and you always reach your little bear paw under the stream of water from the faucet. You don’t mind getting splashed, and you try and sneak drinks of the bath water.

Cole, you give the tightest hugs, the most heartfelt slobbery kisses, and when you snuggle into us and lay your head on our shoulders, we just about melt. Thank you, thank you, thank you, for the joy you have brought into our lives this past year. You are such a special little soul and we absolutely love you with all of our hearts!

Summer Fun List

It is hard to believe yesterday was already the first day of fall. Oh, glorious fall! We are so glad you are here! Before we dive head first into our favorite season, we have a few end of summer highlights to share. One highlight was our summer fun list. Boy, did we have fun this summer!

We sat down with Isla at the beginning of the summer and brainstormed all sorts of fun summer outings and activities we wanted to enjoy during the season. We knew we wanted to display our list, and thought it might be fun to use the Thankfulness Tree we created last fall. This lead us to dreaming up different ways to utilize Isla’s Thankfulness Tree year-round. We are so excited to share more as the tree evolves throughout the seasons! We’ll be sure to outline all the steps we took, in case your family would like to do something similar.

Making a Summer Fun List Tree:

So, after we created our summer fun list, we made a basic tree out of butcher paper and marker. We then taped the tree to Isla’s door, since it is a spot we see often. Next, Isla applied a simple watercolor wash using varying shades of green to a few sheets of watercolor paper. When the paintings dried, we ran them through my silhouette machine to cut out the simple leaf shapes. You could easily hand cut the leaves as well. Next, we wrote down one item from our summer fun list onto each leaf. We are very fortunate to have a Daddo with some sweet hand-lettering and doodling skills, so he took over during this step. The leaves certainly don’t need to be this fancy. Had I written them, they would not have looked this good! Lastly, we put the leaves up on the tree.We didn’t end up doing everything we had dreamed up for this summer, but we did enjoy most of the outings and activities from our list.

The leaves are such a fun visual reminders of the time we spent together this summer, and we will keep them up until October, when we begin transitioning back to thankfulness leaves. I’m actually really excited about that transition because we plan to incorporate a daily reflection activity as we swap out our summer fun leaves with our fall thankfulness leaves. We’ll share all about it next month!

Visiting Family in Central Oregon

We enjoyed the most wonderful visit with Isaac’s sister, Rachel, and her family at their beautiful new home in Redmond last month! There was lots of quality family time (the girls were literally playing from the minute their eyes opened in the morning to the minute their heads hit their pillows at night), and plenty of exploring around Central Oregon.

We spent one stunning evening biking around Sunriver. Isla and I shared a tandem bicycle and we LOVED it! Cole was happy as a clam, perched in his bike trailer- so happy in fact, we have already purchased one at home! We followed up the ride with a tasty dinner at a food cart pod in Bend, and then went for a well-deserved ice cream at another food cart pod. There is no shortage of good food when we are together!

Biking was definitely a theme during our weekend, and Isla spent lots of time practicing her skills on Mia’s little bike in their cul-de-sac.

Isla Grace Marshall, critter whisperer. She was absolutely thrilled to see her first real-life praying mantis, and patiently coaxed it onto her hand. I absolutely love how fascinated Isla is with the natural world! Her curious spirit drives everything she does. She loves every creature she comes into contact with, and wants nothing more than to befriend each and every one of them.

We ventured over to Smith Rock on our last evening to take some family photos of the vanBaggen family to commemorate all of the exciting milestones (new city, new home, new jobs, new pup!) they had been experiencing in the past month. It was a perfect evening, and everyone was absolutely captivated by the breathtaking landscape.

We are so grateful for our happy family time in Redmond, and cannot wait to return for another weekend of adventures together in November! I’m wondering how much we’ll need to bundle up for those bike rides…
