Happy Halloween 2018!

Halloween 2018 has come and gone, and it was absolutely wonderful! I am sitting here, reflecting on the fact that it is November 1, and wondering how in the world so much of the fall season is already behind us?! I wish we could just double the length of October and get rid of a different month, like cold, rainy February!

Like the last two years, I teamed up with my aunt to create the kids’ Halloween costumes. She handled all the sewing (thank you, Grauntie!) and I added all the detail pieces (thank you, glue gun!).Isla has developed such a fascination, and love for, honey bees and bumble bees this year, so this seemed like the perfect costume for her. She requested that her costume be “really realistic” and I’m pretty sure she was hoping to fool someone into thinking she was a genuine bee. The second we put the costume on her, she’d go straight into character, buzzing around and hovering next to flowers. I sure do love this little bee and her big imagination!Isla’s flowery trick-or-treat bag was perfect for a bee. To make the bag, I hot glued a sheet of green felt to one side of the bag and then cut out some simple felt flowers and leaves and attached them with hot glue. The bag made it 3/4 of the way through the trick-or-treating before the bottom of it got damp and all her candy spilled out. Ooops! Thankfully, Cole was happy to let Isla use his bag for the remainder of the evening.

Isla’s wings were once fairy wings from the Dollar Store! With her permission, I transformed them into bee wings by removing the sheer glittery fabric, bending the wires into a longer shape, stringing iridescent pipe cleaners across each wing, and then hot gluing iridescent pipe cleaners along the edge of the wings. I attached the wings to the back of the Isla’s costume with hot glue, but then quickly stitched around the base of the wings just to ensure they stayed attached.

Isla’s stinger was a foam cone I painted silver and (you guessed it) attached with hot glue.Hanging out in the lavender, “just like a real bee.”

To make the bee eyes, I took a foam egg and cut it in half with a serrated knife. I then covered each half with sparkly black fabric. I secured the edges of the fabric on the underside of each eye with hot glue and staples.

The antennas were sparkly black pipe cleaners, attached with hot glue. We’ve been calling Cole “Baby Bear” since he was born, so his Halloween costume was pretty much a given. He definitely is our baby bear! Grauntie did all the work on Cole’s costume; I just had to dress him in it! Cole is a big fan of soft, cozy textures, and every time he sees his costume he hugs it and snuggles his face into it. It is the sweetest!

Sometimes they’re into posing for photos together… sometimes they’re not. When Cole doesn’t want to stand, he is pretty great at turning himself into jell-o.Cole was farm more interested in our neighbor’s Halloween decoration. He kept saying, “Huh-wo!” (hello) to the skeleton and giving it high-fives.

Isla asked if we could take some photos of her on the swing, so it would look like she was flying.

It was fairly dark and drizzly on Halloween morning. Though the forecast had called for rain all week, we somehow made it through trick-or-treating with only a few sprinkles. Hooray! Our sweet little skeleton after our morning walk and Isla’s jack-o-lantern. She was incredibly proud that she carved the eyes entirely by herself. Our fabulous 2018 Trick-Or-Treat crew! Loved celebrating with these cuties and their wonderful parents!Baby Bear was absolutely transfixed by all of the Halloween decorations around our neighborhood. I cannot wait to see him with Christmas lights! We love, love, love the effort everyone in our neighborhood puts into decorating for Halloween- lights, skeletons, inflatable creatures, and cobwebs galore. It makes for such a magical trick-or-treating experience!

Baby Bear was starting to get the hang of trick-or-treating after a few houses. He was so proud of his candy! These chocolate eyeballs were the hit of the night for our little bee! After a successful evening of trick-or-treating we headed back home with our friends for pizza, drinks, and a few pieces of candy. The kids had a ball handing out candy to the trick-or-treaters who came to our door throughout the evening. Gathering together like this has become such a warm and happy tradition, and we’re so thankful to have the opportunity to host each year.  It was the perfect way to wrap up our day. Happy Halloween, friends!

Cinco De Isla!

I am SO excited to share details from Isla’s 5th birthday party! Isla and I came up with the theme, “Cinco De Isla” over a year ago, shortly after she started attending a Spanish immersion pre-school. Since then, we’ve spent so many happy hours snuggled up together, dreaming up ideas, talking about tacos, and pouring over Pinterest inspiration.

Isla’s party was filled with DIY details- our favorite kind of party! Isaac built this awesome “5” piñata for Isla. I took Isla on a special trip to the store to select the candy to fill it with. It was a very serious decision making process for her, one which involved a lot of thinking and swapping of various kinds and flavors to achieve just the right balance of red licorice (her favorite), lollipops, and chocolates.

I was inspired to make Isla’s “cinco” shirt the night before the party. Thanks to some felt and fabric glue I was able to make it happen.I surprised Isla with these tissue paper hair pins and she was SO excited! She was impressed I had made them and is super eager to learn how to make her own. Hooray for future crafting opportunities with my girl! This festive custom paper picado banner by Lula Flora Designs was one of our very favorite pieces of decor! I chose not to write Cinco de Isla on them, thinking that grammar was incorrect, but later learned the “Isla es Cinco” grammar was actually incorrect- oops! Thank goodness the banner looked awesome, regardless!

For our fiesta, my mom made her famous enchilada suiza and dry soup (thanks, Mom!). We also prepared taquitos for the kiddos and 7 layer dip cups with cactus tortillas. We set out a bowl of cutie oranges, and chips with salsa and guacamole. When Isla’s friends arrived to her party, they each got to decorate a pot and pick out a cactus to plant in it. I chose festive ribbons and trims at the fabric store and the kiddos applied them to the pots with tacky glue. We had a bag of potting soil on hand to plant each cactus. I made little name tag skewers with tissue paper toppers to stick into each finished pot.We laid several serape blankets in the yard for the kiddos to sit on while they ate. Super simple set up and they loved sitting all cozied up together. Not long after the Cinco De Isla party plans began, I started reminiscing about the taco costume she wore for Halloween when she was one (oh, my heart!), and I thought about how fun it would be for Cole to wear it to her party. I was so excited it fit him! He was determined not to stand up on his own for a photo, but it was still really fun to see that cute little taco crawling around all the festivities. This cactus candle perched perfectly on top of a churro cupcake with caramel drizzle. This cupcake recipe was soooo tasty, and was one of several sweet treats we served at Isla’s party!

To make the caramel drizzle you will need:

1 cup of sugar

6 tablespoons of butter (cut into several pieces, so it will melt easier)

1/2 cup of cream

Heat the sugar in a small saucepan over medium high heat until the sugar melts and turns a caramel color. Add the 6 tablespoons of butter and stir until incorporated. Remove caramel from heat and stir in the cream. Let the caramel cool and resist the urge to eat it all! If you really want to add an extra kick to this sauce you can add 1/4 cup of whiskey after you add the cream. YUM!

We also served this super tasty churro chex mix and homemade choco tacos that we topped with chocolate magic shell and assorted chocolate candies!

Once the kiddos were sugared up, it was piñata time!It was SO much fun watching the kiddos go after that piñata. Our original twine wasn’t quite strong enough, so we had to take a brief break to re-hang the 5.When that piñata finally broke open (it was a tough one!) the kids raced for the candy! They scrambled to stuff it into their goody bags, and our hearts were so warmed when we saw some of them notice an imbalance and start to share their candies with others.Daddo hand-lettered these awesome goody bags for Isla and her friends to keep all the candies from the piñata.Bubba in his beep beep, checking out the piñata.

All the kiddos gathered around for the gift opening, and were so eager to see what Isla received. It was adorable! Her own real bow and arrow set! Here she is telling me, with complete seriousness, that these are REAL arrows! Isla received so many fun and thoughtful gifts. Thank you, friends and family! We are so grateful to have enjoyed such a fabulous fiesta with you. Muchas gracias to you all for celebrating our amazing FIVE year old with us!!!

More Pumpkin Patches… Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop

Our fourth pumpkin patch adventure of the season took us to Bauman Farms with Nana, Papa, aunties, cousins, and our friend, Michele!

The farm has grown and added so many attractions over the years, it feels almost more like a state fair of autumn themed Disneyland!

We indulged in a tasty apple cider slushie and some warm, freshly made apple cider doughnuts.

Hayride out to the pumpkin patch!

The girls insisted on pushing their own wheelbarrow through the patch together. It was so sweet! They also busily scampered around, filling the wheelbarrow with teeny pumpkins and bumpy gourds. Thankfully, we were able to convince the girls to leave most of their collection in the patch!Cole made a sweet little goat friend, and absolutely loved feeding him!Such a fun and festive afternoon!

Up next we visited the pumpkin patch with Isla’s Pre-K class. The trip took place the day after her birthday, so we brought snacks to celebrate. We decorated cuties with jack-o-lantern faces and cut watermelon into bat shapes- fruit bats! Super easy and the kids loved them.

Our final pumpkin patch trip was to BiZi Farms with Nana, Grauntie and Gruncle. Bizi Farms was indeed busy, with literally hundreds of people in line in front of us- and we arrived 10 minutes after opening! Thankfully, they are prepared for these masses, so we moved through the line pretty quickly and were busy enjoying their farm festival activities before too long.

First up, Isla got to work her strong muscles at the corn grinding station. Isla was absolutely delighted to feed the chickens with the corn she ground.

Then, we watched the cider press, and sampled fresh cider. After that, Isla tried her hand at roping! I’m pretty sure she would have stayed here all day if she could have. Then, this hilarious bouncy race course. Next, we met a few new goat friends.Cole wasn’t certain how he felt about these goats. Haha! Finally, we took a hay ride out to the patch and started searching for pumpkins.I love the stalks of corn growing throughout the patch!Post-patch snuggles. We love these two little pumpkins so much, and we are so grateful for the wonderful fall adventures we’ve been sharing this year!

Princess Piper’s Pumpkin Party

One week into October I had already been to 3 pumpkin patches. I’m not embarrassed to say we’ve been to more since! The pumpkin patch is definitely my happy place. I’m also seriously loving the fact that Isla gets just as excited about scouring the patches as I do!

We visited Papa’s Pumpkin Patch with Piper for her 4th birthday. She planned everything about her day: the princess dress, the pumpkin patch, pumpkin carving, and lots of spooky Halloween decorations. It was perfect! We had such a great time celebrating one of our favorite pumpkins!

Oh my goodness, we LOVED Papa’s Pumpkin Patch! The sprawling patches were filled with pumpkins of every shape, size and color you could imagine. Looking through all of the varieties and selecting our pumpkins felt like a treasure hunt. Both families left with a full wheelbarrow! The girls were tripping over the vines all over the place. It didn’t take long before they were covered in mud- all part of the fun of a trip to the pumpkin patch in the PNW!

This was the first patch we’ve ever visited that had u-pick mini pumpkins. Needless to say, Isla found her ultimate happy place! Tough vines? No problem for Piper the problem solver!

Isla’s pride and joy: “the teeniest tiniest pumpkin in the world!”
After the patch, we continued the party at Piper’s house with pumpkin carving and lots of play time.We wrapped up Piper’s party with an ice cream cake and matching bat girl dresses: the perfect end to a perfect day!

P is for Pumpkin

Earlier this month, Cole and I worked on a fun little project with Justine from PNW Littles and her darling daughter, Eleanor. We all spent a morning at The Pumpkin Patch so that we could take some marketing photos for PNW Little’s fall line. Cole and Eleanor both modeled their adorable P is for Pumpkins onesies and seriously, these two could not have been cuter! Cole has continued to wear his onesie a couple of times a week, at least. It’s the perfect fall top, both layered or on it’s own- especially given all of this incredibly warm weather we’ve been having! If you’re shopping for a sweet little in your life, we definitely recommend checking out PNW Littles’ clothes!

While in the patch Cole was inspired to try his hand at standing several times. It was so exciting!

Cole was fascinated with the migrating geese- just like his big sister was when we brought her here for the first time!
