Hello, Lusaka!

After a quick 72 hour stopover in Dubai, we headed to Zambia for 10 days!

The kiddos kept entertained with movies, books, and snuggling, and did so well on the flight to Lusaka!

Hello, Lusaka! We came to Zambia to spend time with our dear friends, Ty and Frannie, from our Shanghai days. It was our first time meeting their adorable son Henry, and their first time meeting Cole. The boys were born just a few weeks apart and it is safe to say we have been eagerly awaiting this reunion since then!

We spent the first 4 days of our stay at their lovely home in Lusaka. Our time together was just what we needed: quiet mornings, time to exercise and meditate, sunny afternoons in their gorgeous backyard, kids exploring and playing, tasty margaritas made with the limes from the garden, cooking and sharing amazing meals together, heartfelt happy conversations about everything under the sun, and every night, fresh baked chocolate chip cookies before bed.

Bubba meets the hose. His life will never be the same.Backyard swinging bliss! When your friends love your babies like they are their own.
I could not wait for Isla to reunite with her Uncle Ty and Auntie Frannie- I just knew they would pick up right where they left off, totally crazy about each other! What was especially heartwarming is how quickly Ty and Frannie built a relationship with Cole. The minute he saw them each day he would get the biggest grin across his face and say, “Hi Feenie! Hi Ty!”

Cole discovered his love for dill pickles while staying at Ty and Frannie’s house. He would ask for them every day. “Peek-o? Peek-o?”

Meet Little Hopper, the cricket Isla found in the garden one morning. He was missing a hind leg and Isla wanted to give him a safe place to rest. They spent a solid 15 minutes together and though she put on a brave face, Isla’s eyes filled with tears when she released him in back into the garden. Love her tender heart so much!Sweet Henry.Henry’s favorite mode of transportation is running. Cutest little twinkle toes!In preparation for our arrival Uncle Ty constructed a big bubble wand. Isla had a ball chasing the bubbles! Cole was mostly interested in trying to sneak tastes of the bubble solution.Isla loved harvesting veggies from the garden with Uncle Ty!After a very relaxing start to our stay in Zambia, we all packed up and headed to South Luangwa National Park for 3 days of game drives. Can’t wait to share about that adventure soon!

72 Hours in Dubai + Jet Lag Travel Tips

Our first stop on our 5 week trip was a 72-hour stay in Dubai. We made sure to pack in plenty of fun during that short time, including visits to some favorite restaurants, dinners with friends, a trip to our favorite beach, and two photo shoots!

Our little bubba decided 4:30am was an appropriate wake up time, and after several unsuccessful attempts to convince him to go back to sleep, we decided to start our day. We arrived at Al Reef Bakery just as the sun began to rise and indulged in some glorious cheese bread. Then we drove to our favorite little beach to splash in the shallows and search for the perfect seashells. While we would have preferred a bit more sleep this morning, it was wonderfully nostalgic to start our adventure this way. I am amazed how each trip back to Dubai feels like a homecoming.Al Reef, your cheese bread makes the jet lag worth it. Seriously. Thank you!As Dubai is constantly evolving, we were thrilled to find that our favorite beach still existed. It took us a little while to find it this trip, given the ever-changing roadways and landmarks, but the minute our toes sunk into the sand it felt like we were wrapped in a warm familiar hug.The shore was covered in a countless tiny shells and Isla went crazy collecting. At one point she looked up at me and exclaimed, “This is the best day of my life!”Jet-lagged mumblings from Cole’s crib at 2:00am this morning: “Poo poo… potty… thpppt… toot!”

The next morning we woke up at 4:00am to him singing “We Will Rock You.” I kid you not.Cole was eager to help Isla collect shells as well… and only tried to eat about half of them. Oi! When will this “put everything in my mouth” phase end???

Cole’s first dip in the Persian Gulf. This is the very same beach we came to right after we found out we were pregnant with Cole!“Air pane!”How Cole impresses the families we photograph… both fingers, both nostrils. (face palm)Isla was in absolute heaven playing on the sand dunes at Al Qudra lakes during our evening photo session. Cole rode around in the ergo for the first half hour and then played in the sand with some toys for the remainder of the evening. As soon as we returned home from this session, we packed our bags in preparation for an early flight to Lusaka, Zambia!

We experienced more jet lag with Cole this trip than we ever have in the past, but got through it relatively easily, so we thought we’d share a few things we’ve learned about overcoming jet lag from our years of travel.

A few of our favorite tips for overcoming jet lag:

  • Book flights that have you arriving to your destination in the afternoon/evening if at all possible. The exhaustion of long-distance travel usually helps you to fall asleep within a few hours, and if you are arriving close to bed time it helps you get on schedule
  • Bring familiar home comforts for your kids’ travel beds, like blankets and stuffed animals. It’s also a good idea to have them practice sleeping in their travel beds at home before your trip.
  • Stick to your exact bedtime routine when you travel. For us that means using white noise, reading 3 stories before bed, giving Cole a bottle while we read, singing a thankfulness song, and giving hugs and kisses. We make sure Cole has his stuffed bear in his bed and that Isla has her stuffed animal with her and water bottle next to her bed.
  • Drink lots of water and eat a big meal before bed. A full tummy helps with sleepiness.
  • Arm yourself with a boat load of patience! It is VERY likely your kiddos will wake up throughout the night, so being consistent with your sleeping routines for getting them back to bed is critical. If you are traveling with your spouse, take turns assisting the kids when they wake up to help you both get as much rest as possible. Make sure to THANK one another too. Sleep deprivation leads to crankiness, and showing a little appreciation goes a long way to keeping you happy and united.
  • Don’t nap more than 2 hours during the day as you are getting adjusted to the new time zone. Set alarms! (Notice the “s”)
  • Make plans that require you to be up and participating in activities during the day (walk, park, swimming, etc.) This is critical! Being outdoors is especially helpful, as exposure to the daylight and fresh air helps your body adjust to the time.

We had the thought, after dealing with Cole’s jet lag, that perhaps we should have brought Melatonin. Has anyone had good luck using this when traveling? Any other fantastic travel tips for getting over jet lag? We’d love to hear your ideas!

All the Hearts

While Valentine’s Day is a great excuse to indulge in extra chocolate and sprinkle red glitter everywhere,  our family is part of the camp that prefers to celebrate love every day. We surrounded ourselves with hearts and a little extra sweetness all month long in February.

We had fun putting together a little Valentine’s themed goody bag for Isla. She received a great new book, gummy x’s and o’s, heart napkins for all of the little picnics and treats she likes to whip up, a little heart ornament, and a new heart sweater. I picked up all of the heart themed items when they were on sale after Valentine’s last year and tucked them away.Just Add Glitter was an instant favorite!

Madelyn joined us for a play date and some Valentine’s cookie decorating. For me, the joy of sugar cookies lies more in the decorating than the eating. (If I’m being totally honest, it’s probably a good thing that there are some cookies out there that I’m not crazy about!) We substituted almond extract for vanilla in these cookies, however, and they were miiiiighty tasty! We also made our own simple buttercream frosting with butter, powdered sugar, almond extract, and a bit of cream. The Valentine’s baking continued with these Love and Kisses cookies and we think they are just about the cutest little treats ever! They are wonderfully tasty too.  Isla helped measure and mix all the ingredients, meticulously coated each ball of dough in festive sprinkles, and carefully pressed the kisses into the cookies when they came out of the oven. We had as much fun making the cookies as we had eating them!THIS is how Isla and Cole brush their teeth together! And my heart explodes every time. They’re getting to an age where a genuine friendship is forming, and it is seriously the best thing in the world to witness! We drove to the cottage on Valentine’s Day and continued to celebrate with all the hearts and decadent treats throughout the weekend. Isla and I had so much fun making these sweet tissue paper heart sun catchers together, and they sure brighten up the moody PNW coastline. It might be my past teaching-self talking here, but I love having a laminator!Daddo made us tasty heart-shaped pancakes with whipped cream for breakfast.Cole LOOOOOVES whipped cream! Normally we make our own and sweeten it with a little stevia, so we don’t mind putting a squirt of it on his finger as a treat. We just had the canned stuff today, but Cole recognized it and started asking, “Mo? Ah-bee?” (More? Please?) He was so darn cute and using his manners, so we said, “Sure!” and put a little on his finger. He devoured it! Within seconds he was asking, “Mo? Ah-bee?” Not wanting to load him up on sugar, we hesitated. He looked back and forth between us and asked again, “Mo? Ah-bee?” Then he cracked the biggest grin and added, “Shoooor.” Oh man, are we in trouble with this kid!Cole is talking up a storm lately! His vocabulary is growing every day, which is super fun for us! “Heart” is the first shape he identified. None of us actively tried to teach him the word, but he picked it up along the way. One day Isla was wearing a shirt with a big heart on it and Cole walked up to her, pointed and proudly said, “Heart!” I am so pleased the first shape he recognizes is the one associated with love.Isla LOVES spending time playing games with her Nana. Her new favorite is Sorry! The level of strategy Isla has absorbed from their games together is seriously impressive!Lost in thought, enjoying his graham cracker and watching the “shoshen” (ocean). It took only one taste of a spritz cookie at Christmas time for Cole to learn the word “cookie”. He refers to most foods as “nummy nummies”. He is SO my child! Cole’s vocabulary is exploding lately and he is impressing us with new words and short phrases each day. My current favorites are “ah-go ah-go” (avocado)- not to be confused with “I go?” which is what he says when he wants to go somewhere. When he really wants something he asks for it, and then adds a long sugary sweet “shooooor” (sure) to try and persuade us. He loves pillows and soft blankets. He snuggles into them and says, “cozy!” Of all the adorable things Cole has been saying, I think “tic-o tic-o” (tickle, tickle) might be my most favorite because he can’t say it without scrunching his nose, drawing his shoulders up, and giggling. This dude seriously loves greeting the neighbors who walk past our cottage.Gopher holes make for endless fun. Who knew?!When Isla and I were making our Valentine’s Day heart sun catchers, Cole toddled over to investigate. He reached for the tissue paper squares, and as he typically does with fragile items, immediately began crumpling them. Isla and I noted how the crinkled squares looked sort of like flowers, and the idea for a collaborative art project was born! Isla drew a line of stems and topped each of them with one of Cole’s “flowers.” This has me totally inspired to think of other ways these two can work together to create art!

Cole’s First Haircut

This month Cole had his first haircut and it felt like such a BIG milestone! We were so torn about cutting his wild and adorable baby curls. We actually went back and forth about whether to do it for weeks. Part of me feels silly for being so attached to his hair, but of course the true attachment is in the symbolism. Those sweet curls are among the final fleeting signs of his babyhood, and it was sure hard to say goodbye to them.

We read great reviews about Lil Snippers up in Vancouver and noticed they had fun car chairs, so we decided to take Cole there. It was such a great choice! Our stylist spent a lot of time talking with us about our options, and she was so gentle and patient with Cole. At one point he wanted to get out of the car and started to cry. Another stylist came right over and started blowing bubbles for him. It was the perfect distraction, and we had a happy boy once more!As hard as it was to say goodbye to Cole’s curls, we absolutely LOVE his new big boy haircut! The back of his little head (and the way his ears stick out just slightly) is too cute for words!!! This sounds crazy, but it seems like more than his appearance has changed. It seriously feels like we have a new little person living with us. I’m not sure if his haircut coincided with a bunch of new synapses forming or what, but Cole feels different to us. A little sweeter and definitely a lot more grown up. There’s no doubt about it; we have a big boy now!

2019 Snow Day

Snow Days. We love ’em.

Isla eats all the snow.A couple of pairs of kid socks and some plastic baggies make for decent baby gloves! We’ll invest in some real gloves next year =)Cole did not take an interest in eating the snow .He did, however, think it was great fun when we “made it snow”.Until a blizzard hit. Oops. Sorry, buddy!
