A Travel Nightmare Anniversary Tale

Our 13th anniversary will certainly go down in the books as our strangest yet. We spent the day on a cross-country flight to Boston with our kiddos. Romance to the extreme, am I right?! The trip turned in to quite the “adventure” and ended with us eating CEREAL for dinner at 1:00am! After yesterday’s cereal anniversary post, I just had to laugh! Here are the highlights (or low lights?) of our totally bizarre anniversary:
– We arrived at the airport to check in and learned our seats were not together. They were actually in 3 separate rows, meaning Isla was expected to sit in a row by herself. Uhhh… ? After some juggling, Isla and I were able to sit together, but Isaac was 5 rows ahead with Cole on his lap.
– We endured one of the scariest landings of our lives. There was a huge storm off the coast and we flew through part of it during our descent. Lightning flashed outside the windows, and the plane was bouncing and lurching from side to side. Not fun at all.
– Mid-way through all the turbulence I heard Cole begin to cough and cry. Knowing how easily this kid gets carsick I realized he was airsick. I immediately began panicking for Isaac and envisioning the worst as Cole vomited everywhere.
– By some miracle Cole didn’t throw up–although Isaac informed me there were some juicy burps– and then he fell asleep immediately upon landing. A huge shout out to our amazing pilot who handled that terrible weather so skillfully and got us on the ground safely. We are so grateful!
– The rental car place offered to upgrade us to a mini van for free. Thinking about the extra space, we decided to go for it. Clearly we forgot about the fact that we’d be driving around a busy city with super narrow roads and very tight parking spaces. The minivan was a bad choice.
– We made our way through the pouring rain and poorly-lit roads to our Airbnb, a cute little apartment in a great part of the city. En route we stopped at a drug store to get milk for Cole and stock up on snacks.
– We arrived to our Airbnb sometime after 11:30pm. We were met with row after row of identical buildings, the wind and rain were still blowing around like crazy, and we were struggling to find the tiny alley where we were supposed to park our car.
– At this point, Isla decides it is time to get up on her soap box and complain dramatically about how dark and scary the neighborhood is, how unfamiliar everything is in Boston, and how she will probably have nightmares… how do kids know to pull this stuff out at EXACTLY the worst time?!
– We found the alley. The notes from the Airbnb host instructed us to park in spot 7. There was no spot 7.
– We circled through a maze of tight alleys and parking lots in our big dumb minivan to get back to the alley where we are supposed to park. Spot 3 was open, and upon reviewing the notes from our hosts, they had attached a photo of spot 3, so we figured they had just made an error when they instructed us to park in spot 7. The ominous music should have begun at this point, because there were oh-so many errors with their instructions…
– We unpacked the kids and grabbed the snacks, hoping to dash up the road to our building as quickly as possible, since it was pouring and all our rain gear was packed in the suitcase. I heard a giant pop! The gallon of milk had slipped out of Isaac’s hand, split open, and was spilling down the street.
– We recovered the remaining half gallon and turn to make a run for the building— just in time to see someone pull up to the entrance of the alley, get out of the car and begin throwing up everywhere on the side of the road. Pleasant.
– It was approaching midnight when we made it into the building. The building code worked and we found apartment 12. Phew!
– We punched the code into the apartment door, the light blinked, but the door wouldn’t open. We repeated the process another 3-4 times. We pulled out Isaac’s phone, double checked the instructions (we had followed them all) and tried the door another 3-4 times.
– Suddenly, a half-asleep woman OPENS the door from INSIDE our Airbnb! Uh…
– She informs us that her family has rented the apartment until the next day. We review our Airbnb instructions with the woman, show her the picture of the hosts, and she confirms that they were hosting them as well. She mentioned the hosts had another apartment in the complex. As we looked over the message once more we notice another discrepancy regarding the actual building number, so we assumed we went to the wrong building. We apologized to the woman profusely and thankfully, she was understanding.
– We went to the next building, but the access code box didn’t have the number ‘0’ which is in the access code we were given, so we clearly weren’t supposed to be in that building.
– We ran back through the rain to the van to look back over our notes from the Airbnb hosts. The person at the end of the alley is still outside their car vomiting.
– Upon reviewing the message we discovered there were TONS of inconsistencies within their instructions and notice there was a third building number listed. Perhaps that was where we were supposed to go? I stayed in the car with the kids, while Isaac ran to that building.
– 10 minutes later he returned saying the building code worked, but that apartment 12 was on the 3rd floor instead of the 2nd. He tried the code anyway. It didn’t work and he could hear voices inside that apartment as well, so he left. He then attempted to call our hosts. No answer.
– So, there we were at midnight, huddled up in our minivan, the wind and rain howling outside, trying to find a reasonably priced hotel— a near impossible feat in Boston!
– We finally found a hotel outside the city in Braintree— Good ol’ Best Western to the rescue!— and made our way there. Cole passed out hard on the way and thankfully we were able to transfer him to his bed without him waking. Isaac, Isla and I tucked into the snacks from the drug store, including the Honey Nut Cheerios, for our eclectic 1:00am dinner.
Despite all the craziness and the unpleasantness of our day, we are proud to say we remained pretty darn calm and positive. Go, us! Every traveler needs to earn their badges, and I think this experience gained us each a few!

The Cereal Anniversary

“Did you know 13 years is the cereal anniversary?” You smiled as you handed me a bowl of Honey Bunches of Oats. It was 9:30pm and you just returned from the grocery store. I had mentioned a bowl of cereal sounded really good, but that we didn’t have any. Knowing I was feeling worn down and overwhelmed, you dropped everything you were doing to provide me with a sweet and crunchy pick me up. We snuggled up on the bed, toasted with some champagne, and ate our late night cereal dinner. It’s times like this that I really treasure. Simple moments of togetherness, evoked by thoughtfulness, empathy, and love.

Over the years we have made countless of these heartfelt gestures for one another, and that makes me so, so proud. I love that we are always looking for simple ways to help each other feel valued and understood. I love that we genuinely appreciate each and every one of these efforts and express gratitude so openly. I love that we have gone on wondrous adventures, chased giant dreams, and yet we still place so much value in the little things we can do to make each other’s lives better.

Ikey, I adore you. Thank you for 13 years of reassuring hugs, relaxing foot rubs, and the way you hold my hand in the car. Thank you for getting up with Cole in the middle of the night, making breakfast for us every morning, and always being willing to bring me whatever item I need from the other room. Thank you for making me laugh with your corny dad jokes, inspiring me with your kindness and patience, and finding such sweet and creative ways to bring joy to my life. Thank you for working so hard for our family, dreaming alongside me, and believing in all that we can accomplish together. Thank you for being a dedicated father, a loving husband, and the best friend anyone could ever ask for. Thank you for the big things. Thank you for the little things. Thank you for the cereal.

Birthday Beach Trip

We snuck away to the cottage for Isaac’s birthday this year. Our time together was filled with beautiful walks (our favorite!), sweet spring wildflowers, giggle-filled wave jumping, and celebrating our favorite guy!

Isla brought her binoculars to the cottage and she and Cole spent the first part of the morning perched in front of the window, watching the waves and the dune grass, and the birds hopping around the dew-soaked lawn.

We took an impromptu hike in the morning- an “adventure hike” Isla called it- up through the forest on the hill by our cottage (our first hike through this forest). It was one of those magical misty PNW mornings that is both still and invigorating. The earth was soft beneath our feet, the air was damp, and everything smelled green. This was definitely one of our favorite family walks to date!

The trails we hike are flanked in salal, which produce such darling little flowers in the spring. The only issue is that Cole wants to stop and pick them all!

I love, love, LOVE when he stretches his sweet hand up to be held. He wraps his little fingers so tightly around mine. These moments make me wish I could freeze time!
During our forest hike there was some steep and slippery terrain, so Cole reached his little hand up and asked, “Help you?” That little bit of assistance gave him the confidence he needed to keep pushing forward. Such a strong little wayfarer!

This particular morning started the morning with Isla gifting me this lovely wildflower bouquet. Buttercups have been a favorite of mine since I was her age, so I was feeling loved and nostalgic.

Hooray for Daddo’s Birthday!!!

Happy birthday to my sweet Isaac! I look at this photo and can’t help but smile because it captures the tenderness of your beautiful heart. You are an incredible man, and I feel so fortunate to adventure through life with you. I admire your patience, integrity, kindness, and your efforts to continually grow and educate yourself. I love the little creases that appear beside your eyes when you smile, because I know that means you are feeling your happiest. I value your hard work and persistence at building a life that we love- even when things are uncertain or challenging. I experience my greatest inspiration when we walk hand in hand and dream together. I feel most grounded when I am wrapped up in your arms. Thank you for being my best friend, a dedicated partner in all things, and a loving, present father. You mean the world to us, and we are so excited to celebrate you. Happy birthday, babe!

It’s always hard to leave the beach. But, we are grateful to carry happy memories home with us… and all the sand that comes along with them!

“I pay mah-ner?” (I play in the water?) Cole asked as soon as the ocean came into view. He giggled and cheered with each wave that washed over his feet.

39 and oh-so fine!

We brought Charlie to the cottage with us for the first time this trip. Before leaving, we drove down to Lincoln City and decided to take Charlie on a little beach walk!

Isla and Charlie

On the desk of every great artist sits a sweet cat. Well, maybe not, but wouldn’t that be nice?

“Mom, Charlie is better than eating ice cream all day! And better than going to the children’s museum 100 times! He’s better than going to Disneyland… he’s even better than going to Hawaii!” Those of you who know our Maui-obsessed child, this is really something! Charlie has quickly ascended to the top of all her favorite things.

During their first weeks together I would often find Isla and Charlie curled up together in her reading tent. When I peeked in on them this time Isla grinned at me and excitedly whispered, “Charlie was on my lap and gazing up at me with loving eyes.”

We’re pretty sure getting Charlie was the best parenting decision we’ve ever made.

The Happiest Mother’s Day!

Mother’s Day 2019 was one of those deeply joyful days I hope to remember forever. The day wasn’t necessarily perfect, but then again it was- much like the journey of motherhood! I want to preserve it all though, the mundane and the magical, so I can relive this day over and over in my mind…
My problem solving skills were tested first thing in the morning, as I used shampoo, dish soap, olive oil, and a boat load of conditioner to try and remove sap from my adventurous little Isla’s very long and very thick hair. Next I made trips to two different grocery stores to find oven cleaner. After that I cleaned the kitchen and prepped dinner for the family gathering we were hosting that evening. Then I ran around frantically finishing up last minute details on the gifts I’d been planning and working on for months, all the while wondering how I manage to be so last minute on even the projects I started working on so early?! On top of all these tasks I also dedicated much of the day to surprising Isla. Yes, on Mother’s Day. Which, honestly felt like the very best way to celebrate, because there are few feelings greater than being able to give your child something they REEEEEALLY want and that will provide them immeasurable joy.

Isla has been asking for her own little kitten for years. Literally. Years. We surprised her with this precious little guy, making her number one wish come true, and that moment was EVERYTHING!!! Watching the surprise and excitement wash over her face, seeing her eyes shine with tears, listening to her joyful giggles- I thought my heart would burst!

Welcome to the family, Charlie Miller Marshall. We sure are glad you are here.

The moment where Isla and Charlie first met. I’m not sure I have ever witnessed anything sweeter!

Cole loved Charlie instantly. Not sure that we can say the feeling is mutual…

The little loves of my life. Thank you, thank you, thank you for making me a Mommy!
