We’re all about giving each holiday its own appropriate amount of time to be celebrated, but with Thanksgiving falling so late this year, we couldn’t help but let a little bit of Christmas magic sneak in early. To be honest, it was a fun challenge to find ways for the two holidays to exist simultaneously, like building fall leaf wreaths while listening to Christmas music.
Once we were ready to dive in to all things Christmas, we marked the transition by decorating the tree! We surprised the kiddos with their first set of matching jammies for the season, blasted the Christmas music, and hung the ornaments. It was the perfect night!
Cole showing “Char-ye Bar-ye” the Christmas tree may now be one of my all time favorite holiday memories. I’m not sure which one of them I’ve had to chase out of the tree more this season! A little spray from the water bottle works effectively for both!
After two back-to-back Thanksgiving celebrations, I can say that our hearts and bellies were indeed grateful, thankful, and very full!
We celebrated with the whole Marshall family on Thanksgiving. We enjoyed an amazing feast, the kiddos played non-stop, and we even found a few minutes to sneak away for some family portraits at a nearby park! Not bad for a self-timer propped on a 2-legged tripod leaning against a log!
On Friday we celebrated with the LaRocca/McDaniel families. My mom and Isaac collaborated on the decor and it was absolutely beautiful! The evening was filled with more delicious food, great conversation, and games!
Life is made of many ups and downs, but through it all we remind ourselves we have so, so, so much to be grateful for– especially our health, safety, and loved ones. We are extra thankful for these little turkeys who fill our hearts to overflowing!
We hope your Thanksgivings were filled with warmth and happiness, and spent with those you love most!
You can find the kids’ adorable “grateful thankful very full” sweatshirts HERE.
We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, we LOVE, LOVE, LOOOOOOOVE holiday books! We eagerly look forward to discovering and adding a few new titles to our library each year. Below we’ve shared some of our all-time favorite Christmas books with you!
Let’s start out with the classics. Some of these books are no longer in print, so only used copies are available, but it is so worth it to add one (or more) to your holiday library!
First up, my very favorite Christmas book ever!!! A Christmas Card for Mr. McFizz embodies all of the qualities that make a picture book absolutely magical: a beautiful lesson, brilliantly witty writing, and stunning illustrations. Mr. McFizz, a fastidious and fussy (but good-hearted) critter, learns to overcome loneliness and jealousy after a family of pack rats moves in next door.
What is it about Little Golden Books that instantly evokes such strong childhood nostalgia?! The Biggest, Most Beautiful Christmas Tree was one of my most read and highly treasured Christmas books. It’s a sweet, simple tale about a group of critters who were sad that Santa never came to their tree. Great Aunt Mim came for a visit and inspired them to decorate their home, turning it into the biggest, most beautiful Christmas tree in an effort to catch Santa’s attention.
A Christmas Guest gives me a lump in my throat every time I read it. It is the story of a how young boy and his mom help an elderly woman who appears at their door on Christmas Eve. It is such a beautiful reminder of the importance of giving to others.
The Friendly Beasts Aren’t Tomie dePaola’s illustrtations so stunning?! We have a number of his books, but this is our favorite. It’s actually an old English Christmas Carol that tells the Christmas story from the perspective of the animals of the manger.
The Polar Express is a classic that is seeped in holiday magic and still gives me goosebumps! Follow along as children take a trip to the North Pole to meet Santa on Christmas Eve.
Now on to more recent favorites….
Mr. Willowby’s Christmas Tree Mr. Willowby is the sweetest story of sharing. When Mr. Willowby’s tree arrives it is too large for his parlor, so he lops off the top of the tree to make room. The butler gifts the top of the tree to the maid, but it is too small for the place she has for it so she cuts off the top as well. This pattern of giving continues throughout the story so that many have trees to enjoy for Christmas. This is one of Isla’s very favorite books!
After discovering Pick a Pumpkin this fall, I knew we had to add Pick a Pine Tree to our library! Whimsically illustrated and rhythmically written about the traditions of choosing and decorating a Christmas tree, it is the perfect book for those with nostalgic hearts.
A World of Cookies for Santa This is a fantastic book for little bakers in your life! It tells about the traditions and cookies children from all around the world leave for Santa. Recipes are included too!
This is Christmas is new to our holiday library this year. The illustrations are just darling! A baby chipmunk asks his mother “What is Christmas, Mama?” As they walk through the forest together they observe animals involved in their Christmas traditions and the baby begins to build and understanding of the holiday.
Room for a Little One On the night of Jesus’ birth and old ox lay in his stable. As smaller animals approach, looking for a place to escape the cold, the ox welcomes them in by saying, “There’s always room for a little one.” Mary and Joseph arrive and are met with the same welcome, and that is stable where Jesus is born.
Henry and Mudge in the Sparkle Days This is one of those books where every word is just perfection. Included are three nostalgic stories about Henry and his big dog, Mudge, during the holidays.
Mr. Putter and Tabby Bake the Cake Mr. Putter seeks to make a truly meaningful gift for his neighbor and good friend, Mrs. Teaberry, so he decides to bake her a Christmas cake… only he has never baked a cake before. This is the sweetest story about giving from the heart.
How Winston Delivered Christmas. This clever books acts as a bit of an advent activity! It has 25 chapters, and you are to read one a day starting on the 1st of December and ending on Christmas. We’re excited to try it out this year!
Little Blue Truck’s Christmas I first fell in love with the charming illustrations and upbeat rhymes of the Little Blue Truck series after reading this book. Little Blue Truck delivers Christmas trees to his friends and has one leftover for himself. Kids are given a big surprise when they turn to the back page and see real lights blinking all over the tree!
There are countless versions of this Christmas classic (we have several!), but this Little Golden Book version of The Night Before Christmas has the most charming vintage illustrations, so it is our household favorite!
Favorite board books for our littlest Christmas enthusiasts…
Christmas Cookie Day! This rhyming story celebrates the tradition of making and decorating Christmas cookies. It even includes a special recipe!
Christmas in the Manger Both our kids loved this sweet and simple version of the nativity story, told from the various perspectives of those present at the birth of Jesus.
Christmas Songs A musical book with songs that we enjoy listening to as well! Cole received this last year and absolutely loved looking at the beautiful illustrations, pushing the buttons, and dancing along with the songs.
S is for Santa Our favorite Christmas ABC book with jolly retro illustrations!
Teeny Tiny Santa A teeny tiny fox lives in the forest and fears he is too small for a visit from Santa… but then a Teeny Tiny Santa arrives! A heartwarming rhyming story with darling illustrations.
We hope this list inspires you to grow your Christmas library, and leads to many happy, magical hours of holiday reading with your family!

In the holiday season we seek to give intentional, meaningful gifts that encourage connection as much as possible. When planning/shopping/creating we choose gifts that:
support passions or interests (This may require you to dig deep and reflect– What hobby did that friend mention they wanted to take up? What restaurant did they share they were eager to try? What book did they keep saying they hoped to read? What scarf have they paused to look at longingly every time you are together?)
are useful (We do all we can to avoid cluttering people’s homes with stuff just for the sake of giving)
reflects a common interest or experience we’ve shared (Sentimental gifts can be very meaningful!)
the recipient needs (There is nothing wrong with practicality! Also, if someone gives us a list, it’s likely because they genuinely want or need those items, so we do our best to shop from the list)
if possible, involves an experience (Either something the recipient can enjoy on their own or that you can share together!)
Experiences
Yearly memberships to a place of interest (zoo, aquarium, children’s museum, art center, rock climbing gym, etc.)
Pay for them to take lessons (music, sports, art, etc.)
A Choose Your Own Adventure Day (We have done this with our nieces for their birthdays… give them two options for a place to go, two options for a place to eat, two options for an activity to do, etc. and then let them choose at each step. This is so fun!)
Gift them a day out you can share together (spa experience, wine tasting, concert, class, or day trip, etc.)
Games
Playing games together encourages conversation, problem solving, and connection!
The Cootie Game Looking for a toddler-appropriate game? My mom just got this game for Cole (age 2) and he is LOVING it! Roll a dice to determine which body parts you can add to your Cootie. The first person with a complete Cootie wins! It’s a great introductory game that teaches taking turns and body part identification. Please note there are some small pieces, so definitely don’t leave your little ones alone with the game, especially if they are like Cole and still want to put everything in their mouths!
Sneaky Snacky Squirrel This is one of our favorite family games for young children! It helps children build skills like color identification, matching skills, fine motor skills, and lots of opportunities for strategic thinking.
Sorry! This super fun classic blends chance and strategy. It is a household favorite because it is enjoyable for kiddos and adults!
Fun Pack Card Set This card set has 6 different games: Go Fish, Memory, Old maid, Crazy Eights, Slap Jack, and Matching. Great for your family or to break up as stocking stuffers!
Jenga Another classic that teaches patience, and builds motor skills and coordination. We’ve found playing this always leads to some good laughs!
UNO Now that Isla is getting a little older we are looking for games that encourage strategic thinking, and Uno is an obvious choice! Plus, it is compact and travels well– perfect to keep in your purse or back pack to bring wherever you go.
Spot It! This is another fantastic game that is compact enough to be carried around with you all time time. It’s a fast paced visual game that can be played with 2 or more players. While you can get caught up and play it for long stretches of time, we love that it is simple enough you can play for just a few minutes as well– for example, when waiting in a long line at the store.
Science Kits and Experiments
Science kits are a great way to spend time together learning through hands on experiences.
Geode Kit Children can crack open their own geodes and discover the sparkly crystals inside. We have done this several times with Isla, and she is always giddy about discovering the different crystals inside. Our extra safety tip is to slip the geode into an old sock before hitting it with the hammer to prevent little pieces from flying all over.
Crystal Growing Kit If your kids are half as into sparkly things as ours are, a crystal kit is such a fun option! This kit contains everything you need to grow and observe several different types of crystal!
Science Kit Over 60 experiments are included in this kit! Most supplies are included, except for a few common household items. So many possibilities!
Owl Pellets If you’re feeling really adventurous, this is the perfect gift for young scientists who are interested in exploring more about the predator/prey relationship between barn owls and rodents! This kit includes a bone identification chart, which aids in learning. Isla is getting a handful of owl pellets in her stocking this year and we can’t wait to see her reaction! If you’re feeling too squirmy about the real thing, this kit comes with synthetic owl pellets.
Art Supplies
Our family spends hours crafting and creating together, so art supplies are a common gift for us to share with one another! Consumable art supplies encourage time spent collaborating and imagining.
One of the BEST gifts you can provide an artist or crafty individual is an art cart filled with supplies! We gifted this art cart to Isla for her birthday a few years ago and it gets used every day! If you’re looking for something smaller, this art caddy comes in a variety of colors.
Fill the cart or caddy with a variety of supplies. We’ve linked some of our very favorite products below:
paint pad (we LOVE the quality of this paper and it stands up so well to watercolor and acrylic paints)
paint brushes (we look for a set with a variety of sizes, shapes, and that includes a few sponges)
Handmade gifts are where you can really tug at the heartstrings of sentimental loved ones. The possibilities are endless, so we encourage you to think of ways to incorporate special details of your relationship into the gift.
One of our favorite examples was when Isla made her Nana (an avid reader and plant enthusiast) a book about their gardening adventures together.
Another wonderful option is to have custom jewelry made using your handwriting or children’s drawings. I absolutely LOVE the necklaces Isaac designed and IME Jewlery created for us. They are Isla and Cole’s first and middle names in Isaac’s handwriting– all my loves represented in two beautiful, wearable pieces!
Books
Really, is there anything more heartwarming than snuggling up with your family and a great pile of books to read together?! Books are ALWAYS a wonderful gift idea– especially during the cold winter when you look for extra opportunities to snuggle up together!
Find our all time favorite picture books HERE and our all time favorite board books HERE.
Wayfare
What better way to connect with the people you love than through a shared adventure?! Whether it be a simple walk through the neighborhood or a trip around the world, here are some wonderful gift suggestions for those who wander, and those you walk alongside.
Outdoor Utility Wagon Now that Cole is past carrying age, but not quite big enough for our long walks along the coast, this wagon is perfect for when his little legs get tired! It’s also great for hauling beach toys and cook out gear to that perfect spot down the beach.
Driveable Truck Cole has loved this truck so much since we gave it to him for his birthday, and enjoys taking it on our neighborhood walks! In fact, he was out driving it around this morning. Not only does Cole have the option to drive the truck himself, but we can control it with a remote! Toddler parents, this is a game changer! It is the perfect way for us to help your little car enthusiasts when they are a bit young to manage the steering and acceleration all by themselves.
Macleron Travel Stroller Our Macleron travel stroller accompanies us on all our neighborhood walks and has carried our children through numerous countries! It handles smooth sidewalk, bumpy cobblestone, and even a bit of off-roading with ease, and it folds up easily. One of the features about this umbrella-style stroller we love most is how tall the handles are– no hunching over to push it!
Packing Cubes These cubes have been an absolute game changer for our travel organization! We use them for month long trips abroad, as well as overnights at the cottage.
Electronic Travel Organizer Speaking of staying organized while you travel, this electronics organizer helps keep all your cords and small electronics neat and in one place.
Mi-fold Booster Seat This portable booster seat is so compact and easy to bring along on trips!
Our favorite stocking stuffers for travelers include antibacterial wipes (bring them on the plane to wipe down tray tables and bathroom doors), Emergen-C packets, passport covers, Mentholatum (keeps your noise and lips moisturized on long, dry flights), and compact games (see our list above).
Whew! There you have it! We hope this guide provided you with a little inspiration for your own meaningful gift giving. We wish you all the most wonderful, magical, love-filled holiday season ever!

We totally get it– the holidays are a busy time and the thought of adding more might seem overwhelming! Advent Activities don’t have to be stressful or time consuming. You can add a lot of magic to your family’s Christmas experience with just a little effort and enthusiasm! Below are the strategies we use to keep our advent activities simple and stress-free:
Our favorite super simple advent activities that require little to no extra planning:
Christmas music dance party (takes 5-10 minutes and zero planning! Plus, it helps the kids burn off steam before bed)
Dinner by the tree (last year we were tired after a long day and just ordered take out– it’s amazing how eating by the tree can make even the simplest meal seem like something special!)
Walk/drive around your neighborhood to look at lights (we play Christmas music on our phones as we walk to make the outing more festive)
Draw a Christmas picture (use the supplies you already have at home)
Candy Cane Hunt (hide candy canes around the house and have your kiddos find them. A friend shared this great idea with us: give all the kids headlamps and turn off the lights for an added challenge!)
Play Peppermint Tic Tac Toe (use the red and white round peppermints and green and white round mints as player pieces)
Festive manicure or pedicure (the potential for mess is here with this one, but if you have some red, green and/or white nail polish, you’re good to go!)
We hope these tips help you plan a month full of simple, stress-free advent activities this holiday season!
